  Lets get away from politics and in a light hearted way, lets name and shame any forumite not wearing a poppy also any local dignitary not wearing one. KEEP EM PEELED.

  i deplore this type of scapegoating.
  a lot of people will give to a worthy cause, but do not wish to make a crude public statement.
  no disrespect to poppy wearers.

  I've not got mine yet and when I do I often forget to wear it. I, at least, never forget those who serve or have served this country in the Forces and in particular those who have made the ultimate sacrifice....

  I see nothing crude about once a year showing our respect and giving to a cause that will support those families affected by conflict both past and present. Yes you can argue the Government of the day should give more but we should never ever forget and this is the way most free Countries do it. In fact some Countries do a great deal more than the U.K. to remember, Australia, N. Zealand & Canada with their ANZAC day etc.
  
  Still each to their own point of view, but at the same time this is when we can show why we have the right to express that point of view and give but a little for it..

  Before I get "shamed" I thought that I would take a little time to explain why I refuse to wear a poppy.
  
  During the late 70's and early 80's I ran a small engineering company. Part of our product consisted of some small transducers which we made from small turned parts supplied by a local company. Deliveries were frequently late and as luck would have it a letter popped in the door from British Legion Industries. Apparently they had some spare capacity at their works in BL village. I sent them some drawings and they came back with a quote which although marginally more expensive was attractive from the point of view of reliable delivery. After several phone calls with a Mr Taylor who was the production manager we agreed that I would visit on the following Monday to sign the contract.
  
  It just so happened that the local company phoned wanting me to place a follow up order. I explained that I was going elsewhere. They got a bit grumpy but accepted it as a fact of life.
  
  So it was that on the Monday morning I went to their works. I asked for Mr Taylor but was told that he wasn't in. I explained that I had an appointment. They told me that he had gone out and wasn't expected back. The shop floor foreman came to see me and appeared baffled when I explained the situation. It appeared that on the Friday before they received a huge order from the Ministry of Transport and couldn't possibly find space for mine. British Legion did not have the courtesy to tell me they couldn't do it and Mr Taylor absented himself to avoid me.
  
  I had to go back to my original suppliers who laughed themselves silly and gave me a yarn about taking on other orders and having to complete my job in overtime. That cost me an additional £6,000. I was not and am still not amused. So no, I won't be wearing a poppy.
  
  I will add another posting on Remembrance Sunday when I will be doing my bit poppy less at the war memorial.

  Dave, who runs the Field of Remembrance, would welcome volunteers this year. So, poppy or no, if anyone has an hour or more to spare, do please speak to him and see how you can help. The Field of Remembrance is beautiful, and much-appreciated by so many Dovorians, and without the dedication of good people like Dave just might not happen. That would be a tragedy.
  
  As for personal poppies, I have some which came from our Vimy Ridge commemoration - they are Canadian. Sadly, I lost the one I wore last year (the pin came out), but have a couple more, and I'll continue to wear them as long as I can in honour of all those who served, not just from our own town and country, but our friends from overseas also. The Project will be laying a wreath again this year at the memorial - last year, in December, we then took it to Belgium and laid it at the Menin Gate, in remembrance.
  
  Every day that passes, at the DWMP, we and our super volunteers continue to work on matters in honour of and memory of all those to whom we owe so much. So ... a paraphrase slightly light-hearted to end ....
  
  Remembrance is for life, not just for November ....

  So, Howard, poppy-wearing is a "crude public statement", eh? Shame on you. And some cock-up over a job 30 odd years ago puts you off, Terry? Not being rude, but it's a good job our armed forces don't harbour decades-long grudges and slights over such things, isn't it?
  
  I have been wearing my poppy for the past week too, and will continue to until after November 11 - as every year.

  I Have mine, and will be takeing some to Yper's on the 11th November were the Royal British Legion are turning the lawn around the Menin Gate into a field of Poppys.This service is also being coverd by the BBC. If any one would like us to take a cross to Yper's and place it on the poppy field it would be an honour may be with a name of a lost one on it from our town Memorial.

  I feel terribly embarrassed but last year I bought a rather expensive but rather smart small metallic blazer badge type Poppy and will be wearing it again this year.Obviously I will be tipping dish dosh into the tins.
  
  Natascha and the Brownies will be up at Tesco's selling poppies on Saturday 8th Nov between 11.00am and 14.00 hrs.So go along a put some loose change in their coffers.

  Got mine from a man at Dover Priory,fell off a back of a train,no he was selling them there,and was doing a roaring trade in the morning.
  If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

  Must sat Terry I find your post just a little trivial. You know where I was when you had your problem, in Northern Ireland along with many others & I lost 3 good mates and that is why I find your post trivial to say the least.
  
  Yes I can understand you were angry and £6.000 is a lot of money but a 30 year principle over it..
  You are not hurting the Royal British Legion with this 30 year principle. The money goes to Ex-service personnel and their families that have been affected by conflict and the vast majority now I would think, to those much younger than your 35 year grudge and was it their fault your business was affected by the R.B.Legion. Enjoy your freedom to make your choice to hold a grudge against them that gave.
  
  Remembering is all year round, I certainly do not forget my friends but the poppy and Remembrance Day is about making sure remebrance of the final sacrifice is carried on and the poppy is a symbol of that remembrance. Wear it with pride.
  
  I hope to get down and help Dave as well next weekend, he and others put a lot of time into seeing the Dover Field of Remembrance is just right and the sale of wreaths and poppies goes ahead..
