Nearly forgot, I picked up a leaflet yesterday advertising the market opening this Saturday. Fresh meat available, and they`ll be a roasting pig on a spit. Should be interesting to see how well it goes, and of course, not just a one off event. Will give meaning to the Market Square again.

It wasn't so much invented by me Howard (but thank you) as there had been markets there beforehand, some years ago.
I started the talks with the new market manager and DDC - got the ball rolling so to speak.
I hope it is a success for the shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes, but because of how its being done,I fear it may not be.
The first week should be good because it will encourage people to come into the Town, it's whether it is good for the market stall-holders too, which will of course determine whether they will come back week after week - the stalls have to look good and sell pretty good produce at a reasonable price - not tat, for people to keep coming into Town.
I don't believe the local press (Kathy and team and the others) are being involved enough.
Have you seen anything in any local papers about DBS or what they are doing ? nor have I.
Oh, I did see something once about a market, but it was only once.
Fingers crossed.
Roger

Talking of the Gas Main Works Brian, I am sitting in my office overlooking the many holes in the Market Square and so far this morning no workmen and no vans etc... (no drilling either

) not looking good for Saturday though.

Why don`t we call this an archeological dig site, which should attract scores of visitors.

And if you look on the other side of that leaflet, you will see that they used my map from the Discover Dover leaflet without my permission - isn't that plagiarism ?
R.K. Graphics designed the leaflet and coloured the map streets to show where the businesses are - the market leaflet map is exactly the same.
I wonder what that would be worth ?
I said they couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery without making a mistake didn't I ?
Hope the others aren't fatal or expensive.
Roger
Roger, why worry. In less than 6 months the market will have gone, and gone forever.

don't be so cynical sid, whatever the background to the new market, it is a new thing in the town hopefully bringing in people from outside.
i visit folkestone on sunday mornings now and then purely because of their market.
Howard, Folkestone market is a proper market with plenty of space for the many stalls, refreshment areas and adequate car parking. Dover isn't provisding anything like that. It'll be a few fruit & veg plus a meat stall and maybe some tat to make up the numbers, all minus any market atmosphere.
I'd like to be more positive, but this idea is just devoid of any inspiration or practicality. Don't forget, we are constantly being told there is no money in Dover, so how are these stalls going to survive? Once the weather changes we will see a quick demise I'm sure. sad, but true.

sid
folkestone market occupies a space not that much larger than market square.
none of us can judge it to be devoid of inspiration until we see what the stalls sell and how many people turn up once it gets established.

Somewhat disappointing stall wise. Could have done with the French over here maybe, like Folkestone?
