doubtless all will be aware by now that the forthcoming world cup will not be shown on the big screen in market square.
my understanding is that the district council agreed with local residents that no fooball would be shown.
i think it is very strange that a small group of people can dictate to the rest of the town and surrounding area.
i cannot see what problems are envisaged by showing the world cup.

If some people had listenend to the voices of reason in the first place we would not have this situation.Everytime i see how ugly it looks in that location I want to scream .
Out of place and serving no purpose at all .Now we have people blaming DDC.
Howard it was a small group of people who gave it the go ahead .Its called democracy

Howard, would you like to have what goes on outside your front door dictated by people living on the other side of town?
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

that is no argument i chose to live in purely residential area, if i had bought a place in the town centre it would have been for the advantages and disadvantages of being close to everything.
this is not club football where allegiances differ and could cause disorder problems, there is an alochol ban there too.
ok for the opera(mainly enjoyed by the middle classes) to go ahead there.

having got the big screen in place seems a bit of a shame not to televise the world cup.

quite right keith.
the big screen is there whether we agree with it or not.
would have been a great opportunity for the people of dover to get together and enjoy a big event instead of sitting indoors on a summers day.

What I didn`t mention on my political blog topic about the people I met yesterday, was the noise and drunken shouting from a large group of blokes outside the Albert Hotel, with red hats on and kicking a football about. Went on for quite a while. That must be what many fear with a football match on in the Market Square. It was all going on opposite Gwyn Prosser and his supporter`s.
They`re in the background to the left.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

Wonder why he didn't get the Police to attend, it must have upset quite a number of people and he must have the telephone number of the Police.
It wouldn't have looked good for him if people see he is close to rowdy behaviour but does nothing about it.

I must admit i agree with not showing the world cup on the ugly waste of money big screen , it would cause many problems with drunken football fans and possibly bring trouble to the town with clashes against other team supporters. As a mum of three why should i avoid that area of town if there was a England game on due to hundreds of supporters??? the town is for the use of everyone , it is the main way walking to be beach, tourists miggle around that area, not forgeting that all these supporters would have to be policed . i think the big screen should be removed it looks stupid in such a small town, we are not times square .

oh here we go again about the big bad tv in the square, football should be televised on the tv,as long as its properly supervised.
melissa,i presume if they put the jeramy kyle or oprah winfrey show, nieghbers, home and away along with a mixture of realalty shows you would go and make a day of it with yuor old man and kids.sad really.
Brian your wrong on the point you makes about me. Also you all have a tv in your homes so you wont be missing out. If football is allowed on the tv then i will be campaigning for the final big brother to be shown.
I see no harm in showing all England matches and the semi and final matches on the big screen. Those wayching are all likely to be England supporters and therefore the potential risk of trouble is will be neglible. Careful managing of licensing times around the games will reduce the risk further.
As for showing opera, it would be hard to find a more minority interest to begin with, but infinitely preferable to anything to do with Big Brother (sorry Melissa), however, the screen should be usedto cater for ALL tastes. Therefore why not show the World Cup and other major sporting events, opera, the Proms and Glastonbury for music lovers, and key episodes of things like Big Brother for those who obviously have more time than sense.
If the big screen isn't to be used for the benefit and enjoyment of all, GET IT REMOVED!
England fans with drinking and god forbid if England lose it will result in trouble, in believe other nationality fans will also be down there if it happens after all dover isnt just lived in by british people.

I see our Councillor Leader is looking in .Be good to see his resonse re the TV screen .Another fine mess to sort out .
Melissa drinking is banned but we have all seen the use of hip flasks anyway the crowd can always pop into the Eight Bells or the oub next to the screen .Name has gone from me .You will not stop the drinking .
No, just the enjoyment eh Sue? Wish we could all be a bit more tolerant of others and their likes/dislikes.
If some agree with it or not the screen is here. We have a chance to get some atmoshpere in the town. The town should be embracing it. Making an occassion of it. Give the cafe's the chance to open, get some stalls open. If people dont want to use it they dont have to, but don't stop those that would like to.

I do know people like myself who find the screen totally obtrusive, and completely lowering the image of the town. As Paul says above, it`s here and I`m sure it will be for a long time. I`ve been in the town most days, and I`ve yet to see any of the benches full up with a viewing audience. Yes, local kids singing on it at Christmas time or other current events, but the rest of the time? A big no from me, and I always understand others opinions. Do people really want to come and see the depressing news headlines all day long while they`re on holiday? If it`s yes, then I`m saddened. I`ll say it again, TV will never rule my house or life. No problem with me if other`s feel different. I shall be watching some of the world cup by the way. My eldest daughter will have it on.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.
It will be easy to buy beer n spirits in somerfields and cheaper to we all no it cannot be stopped , in many parts of the country there was trouble during the last world cup .
