The Eighth Annual Paper Boat Race.
The Town Centre Management may have sunk without trace but the Paper Boat Race sails on!
This charming, eccentrically British custom has been taken up by the London Road Community Forum. Once again paper boats will sail majestically down the River Dour from the Pencester Road bridge. Saturday June 28th is the date with the first launch time at noon. Why not enter a single boat or even an office or works team? Primary schools are also being encouraged to join in the fun. Entry is £1 per boat. This is a charity event with all the proceeds going to the Pilgrim's Hospice.
For the primary schools the prizes are £50 for the fastest boat and a shield that the school keeps for a year. Adults will also win prizes.
To be sure of a place you can pre-book your boat now by emailing
boatrace@londonroad.info A unique number will be emailed back to you.
Any other enquiries can be made by calling Dover 205411

Good luck with that Terry..you are brave taking it on. Its an eccentric part of Dover summer life but still welcome for all that. I hear that The Mercury are sponsoring this new version and their involvement might give it a boost.

I've been involved in all of them Paul and didn't want to see it sink.
Yes Bern, we are all totally barmy!
On a serious side, and I mean serious, is there anyone out there who is a qualified first aider? We need one to find a volunteer asap otherwise we can't complete the Risk Assesment as required by both DDC and DTC.
Help!!

do they have to be a consultant in the paper cut depertment?
on a serious note, a lot of the port and ferry workers do that course.
there must be one that reads this and is free on that day.

I bring this to the top again as it's at the end of the week. Also, LRCF have a committee meeting tonight to discuss it and the Connaught 125 event. Although it's a committee meeting anyone can come along, observe and add their input.
It's at the Louis Armstrong, Maison Dieu Road at 8pm.
All are wellcome, even Howard!

Not wanting to be a curmudgeon, nor be accused of poo-pooing quaint, harmless thrills, but surely this 'event' shouldn't be the highlight of my hometown's cultural calendar?
My friends and I used to do paper-boat racing and poo-sticks in Russell Gardens and Kearsney Abbey when I was a kid, but I believe we gave that up around the same time the Bay City Rollers had their last number one. You remember: that being around the same time that Dover still had the semblance of a properly functioning town centre.
Have fun!

It would be sad indictment indeed Andrew if it were the highlight! No idea why you thought that really. As Douglas Adams wrote, it's "Mostly Harmless".
The LRCF secretary, Jeanette Harper, risked life and limb on Saturday doing some promotional shots for the DM. Pity she didn't fall in, it would have made a nice picture!

Nothing personal, Terry.
I'm all for adding a bit of fun and frivolity into our lives. It makes the world a happier place.
Have a good time, regards,
Andy

No, I know it wasn't Andrew. Just surprised that "Paper Boat Race" and "Cultural" should appear in the same sentance!
BTW, could you PM me with the email address of Roger J? Ever so ta.

Hi Terry,
Sorry but I don't have Roger J's email address. I believe my good friend and near-namesake Andrew Stucken may have it, though.
Maybe ask him next time he's on the forum.
Cheers,
Andy

First launch is 12 noon Paul. As to dressing up, it's the short straw at the meeting tonight! Anyone can help, I'm sure Howard would look cute in the pirates outfit!

logged on too late to hear about the meeting, though probably you mentioned it before to me.
i must admit that i am taking special care as to my sartorial turn out on the day.
i must admit that i own a cowboy outfit.
i suppose i could wear that and go as the town council.
