Perhaps no-one realised how big Tesco would become - 50% of Dover's retail spend - according to Nadeem Aziz.
Sometimes I think in the search for the reasons for Dover's problems, we have all overlooked the obvious.

Any more news on Paynes' closure? Is it just the Dover branch or the whole chain?
Such a shame.

Sorry to be a pedant Keith, but "on the move"? Is that just the Dover branch (and if so where are they moving to?), or is the whole chain shutting down (there are a few branches around Kent)?

More bad news today. An inside source informed me today that Dixons/Currys will be closing in eight weeks time. Although trading in Dover has been very good at our local store, the company's strategy is looking to fewer but larger out-of-town superstores, and will be concentrating on the stores at Canterbury, Maidstone and elsewhere.

hardly suprising phil, i cannot see how they have lasted this long.
companies in that sector have small margins and rely on large turnover, the high street units cannot provide this.

But how many more holes can Dover take before it sinks altogether ?
This closure is not due to Dover's poor trading as has been stated, but company policy, which is difficult, if not impossible to argue against, for any Town.
Woollies closed down but not because of Dover; same with Samuels and now Curry's digital.
We need to be able to go out and attract new businesses to Dover, tell them what we are doing here and how we can help, support and market new and current Town businesses and suppport the Town in general.
This can be done under the auspices of the Dover Chamber of Commerce and Dover Business Support - if enough funding can be obtained.
There is a new ambition at the Chamber and that ambition, is moving Dover forward - not by inane promises, but real practical help and support.

Talking to one of the people in the shop yesterday, they say it is not closing, but they do not know if their jobs are safe, by the looks of it , the shop has been taken over by someone else

That will be two less shops boarded up, I do not know who has taken Paynes shop over, and they are keeping the trading name of Paynes, but I do know they are worried in case the new owners do not want to keep existing staff
Sheila
Towns, like any businesses, need to adapt to survive. Pubs and restaurants have done that in response to changes and those that didn't have failed. Services always have to adapt to survive, and to do that they need to know and anticipate their customer needs. Dover must do that too. The councils will be a crucial part of that but I do not have an abundance of confidence in that.......

BERN
How sad it is I have to agree with you.
before you say it howard this is not a knock on this administration.
I think i might even get a liuttle support from Roger.
The planning dept in Dover appears to have a view on wot cant happen rather than what can.
Im so downhearted on our town, but will always play it up hope upon hope that it will get there

there is a bit of a changing of the guard here.
it is not all doom and gloom, last week we had the the new discount footwear outlet open in pencester gardens,
followed closely by the new fish and chip emporium a few doors away.
maybe the smaller independent businesses see a better future than the national companies.
we have had a couple of polish shops open on the london road too.
