Heh! May I tickle you a little more, Ian??
Seriously, there's certainly been quite a bit of chatting about all this ... I think too there are some ominous creaks and crevasses in the mountain.
An example. PaulB mentioned Ron Atkinson. He's the fellow who in that same phrase for which he was dismissed also said the f-word. In another incident he used a vulgar word for female parts, in a derogatory comment on another player.
Strong swearing is offensive to many people, and many would agree that demeaning of women is offensive. Was there an outcry about this; was he dismissed for this?
It raises a question. Might it be that there are people whom it is okay to insult or offend, and others people whom it isn't? Multiculturalism isn't merely ethnicity from "race". Backgrounds of class, age, sex, ability also have their different cultures. They certainly also still affect our chances in life - and provide tools by which others may judge, or prejudge us.
To me, this is rather like a sticking plaster over a gaping wound. It covers it up - but the wound is still underneath. The plaster doesn't heal the wound - the body does that. Indeed, if you leave a plaster on too long, you risk further infection, or delaying healing.
The societal body may need healing. But is the way to do that merely to create different outgroups - "dinosaurs" being an example - or to condemn one form of evaluative discrimination but condone others? I don't think so. That doesn't tackle origins, or promote understanding, equality, and diversity. It simply shifts the focus to a new target and perpetuates the same thing.
