Have you read my Tourism Strategy Barry ? I have sent it to all the Town Team people, including DTC, DDC.
The current branding is "White Cliffs Country - Dover Deal and Sandwich". I am proposing that the emphasis is Town names first, or even just "Dover - White Cliffs Country".
Many more people around the World (and our Country) have heard of Dover, than White Cliffs Country - it could be the White Cliffs of Sussex, the Seven Sisters White Cliffs and Beachy Head etc.
We should now be specific about the Towns. The White Cliffs Country branding was thought up by Roger Madge many years ago - at least 20 and many many people say Dover is not marketed properly and it won't be, if we don't put Dover first.

whilst i would not wish to get in between you 2 bed fellows baz and roger
i'm uncertain what is the best way forward for the District, or if Dover should be promoted in the way roger suggests and not the whole district.
one things for sure, we need desperatly to do something

As I mentioned in Post 95 my feeling is that the White Cliffs Country name was originally done to keep our immediate District neighbours happy. They too ..Sandwich and Deal..are part of Dover District Council and dont want to be excluded from expensive initiatives or strategies...as they made clear at mondays meeting. There is a certain amount of resentment..the meeting was held in Sandwich but was heavy on Dover representation..Cllr Collor, Mayor Ronnie, Jon Iveson etc which didnt go down terribly well with Sandwichites one felt. Although from our point of view it was great to see Dover getting a leg-up..we dont have the hugely lucrative Sandwich Golf on our doorstep.
Marketing is expensive...so if you split the marketing into three, it will mean very little cash ..this wont enable an impact. Thats the problem. I myself love the simple..White Cliffs of Dover as a brandname.

Roger, no it was not actually Roger Madge but his forerunner who came to Dover from the West Country and he was responsible for the English Riviera branding down there (I forget his name).
There is no doubt Dover is not marketed properly and there are some serious problems with the product currently. But with modern marketing you need something very short and 'pithy', the shorter the better.
I was vice-Chairman of Tourism on DDC when the WCC brand was adopted and the reason was not as Paul suggests, but to specifically aim at a target market, the short-stay 'touring' market. By that branding we could create a critical mass of attractions much more appealing than just with Dover town itself. The material could include a 'quaint' small town, Deal and with Sandwich, a medieval town not to mention a whole range of special interest and heritage sites across the District. Given the state of Dover itself at the moment such a District wide strategy would be all the more important.

This is not a political statement .The brand name was carefully chosen years ago . DDC logo was changed although the corporate arms is used on some letters etc /A green line for the country ,blue for the sky cant recall the gold .Barry may recall .
We are selling the whole District .Im a District Chairman .People need to visit Kearsney Abbey ,Alkham Valley ,Crabble Mill all within River Ward .WhiteCliffs Country.
The brochute contains many places within which to stay .One in Alkham has won many awards .
l
Barry is correct the Market brand is correct .Before your time Roger .When our council had money we had more money to spend on tourismnThe public decided anti social behaviour was a problem a new unit was formed and thousands spent on prevention .The pot is only so big .
WE can all help by selling our District whatever its called .Never for get Deal and Sandwich are Towns which hold many attractiuons and they have their own importance .

Well O.K. thank you for the history lesson on White Cliffs Country. I was told (a long time before I became a Councillor) that Roger Madge thought it up; I think it was Cheryl Gilling who told us (Guest House owners) before she left and went to KCC.
I have not suggested that we only market Dover; I appreciate that we have 3 major Towns and this is a District-wide responsibility.
