09:5115858According to the Sunday Times today a new Government leaflet is telling people to avoid trying to convince their children the difference between right and wrong when talking to them about sex. They say that children should be left to form their own views and values.
One on the most basic and important things a parent must do is teach their children right from wrong and to pass on their values. We have done that with ours and judging from our oldest son it has been very successful, listening to him talk to our younger boys at times is just like listening to ourselves talk to them. Yes, it is difficult to do and sometimes they will go through phases of 'revolt', but by sticking with it and drawing strict boundaries you will turn out better more balanced and responsible member of the community.
This leaflet does indeed say it all about this oh so politically correct Government. Forget right and wrong, forget morality - interfering, nannying and wrong, wrong, wrong

10:4815864Let's be clear: either the government is nannying or it is neglecting its duties. Which is it? My own position, which is clear, is that we have a duty to teach values and principles to our children and to demonstrate and evidence the conseqeunces of actions. but if one is going to have a swipe at governmental directives please can we be clear which direction that swipe takes??!!

10:5115865Both directions Bern.
1/ For interfering and nannying in the first place
2/ When doing so, for encouraging the wrong things.
On both counts the Government is wrong - a morality free zone that does not know right from wrong.

11:1215866Then it must be that it is not just this government then. Both hues have, over time, introduced some fairly idiotic and unnecessary legislation and direction. I share your concerns about the intrusive nature of some recent governmental leads - ID cards, DNA sampling, the recent rubbish about using mobile phones to store ones access to money - and it all adds up to a controlling and powerful State. But it has been coming for a long time with cross-party collusion.

the five items of fruit and/or veg a day is a prime example.

12:5015877I note Bern that you have not tried to defend this leaflet but just try to paint all governments with the same brush.
I remember when the left used to critisise Mrs T's Government for being too 'laissez fare' and not nannying both in the economic and social sense. That blows your point out of the water.
Mrs T broadly did get this right but there was more she could have done to further reduce the power of the State. One charge against her was in exerting too much power over local goverment in her fight against extremist left wing councils.
Since 1997 we have had the most interfering nannying Government in our history. Given their lack of competence it is no surprise that we are in the appalling state we are.
DC though has localisation at the centre of his policies. Reducing the number and power of these quangoes that issue such idiotic leaflets as this on behalf of the Government is part of that.

13:2915882Absolutely not trying to defend the indefensible!! I am not sure which of my points has been blown away......I think all governments of all colours in recent years have been guilty of neglect and extreme control in equal measures without ever coming near to getting it right. I have no doubt that the next government will do the same. Our political life has taken a downward turn ever since we started aping the Americans and their brand of personality politics and reducing our respect for intellect and integrity in politics.

16:3615886Maybe the tactic is to make people despair by highlightling/ spinning stories and then the Tories can come in on their white horses and put things right. A return of a back to basics?

17:0315891Tories, Socialists, left, right, they have all let us down inrecent times with their USA copycat electioneering. Spin is an old job - rather like the Oldest Profession but slightly seedier - but it has been out-spun since the 60s and we are reaping the non-benefits.

18:0815942That is the 5th of March, for all those planning to send Barry W a card. Go on, you know you want to.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

18:1815944Mine is on the 11th if you are sending cards, going back to the serious stuff, what matters is you vote,if you do feel free to critise,if you don't vote, then just remember your one vote can make the difference, don't believe me,well a couple of years ago in Dover there was a dead heat, one vote would have made a big difference.
