The same distance from the kerb, and also out in the road. In the top picture, I went through that gap in the railing`s, and unintentionally standing there waiting for traffic which I had to venture out into the road to see coming, I realised just how stupid this angled parking is. I predict that it won`t be too long before an incident happens. Just look at the viewing you have for oncoming traffic in both images. Look at the view you have for that third car in the top picture. If it was the second picture, you`d see it, plus anything behind it. Don`t just take my word for it, go there and see for yourself. Again, those two picture`s were taken from the same distance from the kerb.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

Good report there Colin. Yes I think Nigel Collor DDC cabinet member responsible for local traffic matters is looking at this now following the recent accidents and as I remember John Goodwin (JHG) has tabled a question at the DDC later in the month. John mentioned this on the frontpage recently.
Im not sure how this parking arrangement came about in the first place, whether it was foistered upon us by the Highways Agency or not I dont know. Some speculate that it was a fund raiser for the DDC.

I've been saying this ever since that angled parking was put in, Colin. It's just bloody dangerous, and when there's parking on both sides of the road there isn't enough width for two cars to pass each other. I believe that the reason for changing from side-on parking to nose-on parking was motivated by nothing less than greed - the more you can cram in, the more revenue is generated, and bugger the consequences.
I believe that one of the recent accidents on the seafront was simply because the driver of the car just couldn't see the bike against the background; I checked it out myself the day after it happened and you really did have to look hard to see oncoming cars, let alone bikes, and when there are motorhomes parked in the bay nearest the junction, the view of the road is really obscured, and imho dangerously so.

Ok before anyone says anything.. I will admit i cant parallell park unless there is a MASSIVE space.. but i did look at this the other day...
why are they angled? if you come from Marine Court (like i tend to) its a bit of a pain in the bottom to swing around to get the right angle... if you are going to do side by side.. straight ladies and gents.. not angles!!
I haven't met or spoken to ANYONE who thinks the angled parking is a good thing - nicely demonstrated Colin. Any fool can see how dangerous it is and the person responsible should be publicly revealed. That way we get a better shot.

i must admit i have problems crossing that road, mujst be worse for drivers reversing out.
andy
being fair to the council, they like other councils have been starved of cash for many years whilst asked to taken on more duties and indications are that it will get worse.
parking fees are an important source of revenue.
if paul the fuhrer reads this maybe i will get an invitation to join his lodge.

Howard
I understand what you're saying, that DDC is as strapped for cash as everyone else, but in installing that angled parking, safety has been compromised, and that cannot be acceptable.

Hi Paul yes you are right and thanks Colin for bringing this up again,I am asking a question at council tomorrow and here is the wording;
Can the Portfolio Holder for Access and Property Services(Cllr Collor) update this Council on the series of serious accidents on the Dover Seafront in recent weeks and is it true that the end on parking has been put in place so as to maximise parking fees and what iniative,if any,is he working on to reduce the accidents on this dangerous strech of road?
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!
John, being a bit pedantic, but shouldn't the first word be "Will" instead of "Can"?

If the majority of people drive in from Marine Court direction and reverse into a space, then they can safely see to pull out when leaving ?
Been nice knowing you :)
Firstly, they won't, secondly why should they, and thirdly, that won't help with the narrowing of the road. It is just so obviously wrong!!

I took this image yesterday. Look at the white van. In theory its parked correctly but look how it closes down completely the incoming traffic lane. The car coming along has to cross into the oncoming traffic lane just to get by. A very far from ideal situation. When the seafront is packed this leads to allsorts of difficulties which should be clear to all. But look closer still, and you can see the parking bays actually jut out into the incoming lane anyway..bizarre.
Also the even bigger problem, is the manouvering required from motorists in order to get into the angled positions in the first place, particularly if approached from the east.
I wanted to get this picture up in time for the DDC Meeting tonight on the issue. Thanks John well done.

Because I get nervous Paul! and dont mind reversing out into the BIG space... and dont like reversing INTO little ones.. its still not goign to help anyhows if you have a van like that anyhows... it would be my luck i would be stuck next to it..
In fairness if i know its late in the evening and its only me.. i park sideways across 2 bays anyhows!! Only if i am staying in the car might i add!!

Yes in the evening Jenn its easier to park that way and quite a few do it.
But our battling Councillor, John Goodwin (JHG) was hopefully in action last night at the DDC meeting. Following the inclusion on this thread of the latest picture..see white van shot...John did table a supplementary question as follows..
"There is a problem with the seafront, where in one area the Car Parking places actually protrude into the carriageway forcing cars to cross the middle lines into oncoming traffic, and any car other than a small car juts into the road, because the chevron parking cuts down the width of the road. I understand that Cllr Collor has a meeting with the Dover Harbour Police; can you tell me if this farcical parking is on the Agenda? "
John thanks the doverforumites for their help and no doubt will get on here later at some point.

John wasn't able to ask the question last night as he had to leave and go to work.
Too much waffle after a presentation by Bond City Ltd on the progress of DTIZ. This was done "in the pink" so not for public consumption I'm afraid, but it is still progressing along and could still come to fruition.
A written reply will be sent to John and all Councillors, but I do believe that until the Police or Kent Highways decide it is now dangerous, it'll stay as it is, so perhaps it is up to the public to complain to the Police and Kent Highways about it.
Roger
No worries Roger, we'll just wait until someone is killed and then all the councillors at DDC will have blood on their hands. Priorities my friend. Life over shopping.
