- 18 April 2013 08:44225837Re second part of #377 - The Port of Shoreham's then CEO, Phillip Lacey, said exactly the same thing when this trade was going through the port there, until a protester was killed. Very shortly thereafter he resigned and the trade was gone from Shoreham at the behest of the Board and local authority - never to return. Below from SchNEWS8 - 2nd Feb 1995

All of us at the SchNEWS were shocked and dismayed by the sudden resignation of Shoreham Port boss Phillip Lacey on Thursday. It seems the Port Authority for whom he works were equally distraught. Pat Hawkes of the Authority Board said "At last the man has seen sense and I'm glad to see the back of him."
Adur District Council have driven another nail into this coffin by issuing an enforcement order on the Port Authority to cease live exports from the council-owned berth in Shoreham harbour, for which the port does not have planning permission. This will take effect from Sunday 5th Feb. Protests this week will intensify around the high tides.

TEF has been operating a service (mainly freight) to Ostend for years.. I can't remember the name of the one you're referring to.

- 18 April 2013 17:11225918The ferry is the Ostend Spirit which is the old Pride of Calais which TEF recently chartered from P&O after she had been retired from P&O service and laid up in Tilbury, to where she has now returned.
It was supposed to be a new beginning for TEF but they never even completely finished painting her in TEF livery and sailings Ramsgate - Ostend have been sporadic. Their other two ships, Gardenia and Larkspur, are both very long in the tooth and currently laid up in Ostend.
Rumour has it that TEF ran out of money to pay the fuel bills. Not a good day for Ramsgate or Ostend. - 18 April 2013 17:41225922Oh Dear - thanks Ed.
Roger - 19 April 2013 04:15225973Some additional info on the Ostend Ferries website: TSL, who are the Slovenian parent company of TEF, sold their two ferries operating in the Mediterranean to Russian companies on Wednesday. Therefore it would seem more than likely that they are pulling out of the ferry business altogether.

I would imagine also that the increase in carrying capacity in Dover may well have sunk the Ramsgate initiative, took the wind out of the sails as it were. Figures much increased here for the first quarter.
Another cruise line whopper in today brightening up the harbour enormously... its the delightful AIDA Stella again which is very familiar to us now...am hard pressed to make it look at tad different in the shots as the whole fleet looks the same..ie AIDA Luna etc, but here we are...

"At the end of 2012 our company concluded negotiations to allow TEF Mediterraneo Ltd to operate the old Pride of Calais from Ramsgate to Ostend. The ship was re-named Ostend Spirit. However, under the terms of the bareboat charter arrangement the vessel will be returned to P&O Ferries forthwith and will lay up in Tilbury. It is our intention to offer the ship for sale as soon as possible." - 19 April 2013 15:16226036even in the mid-afternoon gloom she looks stunning.

Here she is just after entering harbour in glorious near-blinding sunshine ..Im shooting into the light a short while ago. if anyone wants to see and enjoy this enormous 93,000 tonner pop down to the harbour today..
Clearer pictures to be had later I'm sure..or see the earlier posts back over on page 17.
What a collection of liners we have had already this year..with more to come.

The place is buzzing with the Dover Greeters on hand to welcome people as they come off the bus from the ship, and even a group of buskers providing the entertainment. It's interesting to see what the tourists take pictures of - Castle, St Mary's Church, Town Hall (perhaps this should be open to visitors on such days?) and the Prince Albert pub.

- 20 April 2013 12:19226163Monday 22nd April, the Braemar returns from its two week cruise, TR, at CT1.
On Tuesday 23rd we have two cruise calls, the AIDALuna once again, this time at CTI, making way for the magnificent MSC Musica at CT2, both PoC's of course.
Nothing then until Monday 29th April when the Deutschland cruises into Dover at CT1, PoC. followed by the return of the AIDALuna on Tuesday 30th at CT2, PoC.
The merry month of May begins with two cruise ships on Saturday 4th, none other than the very impressive Norwegian Star at CT2, PoC & the Ryndam TR, CT1.
Then the following day, Sunday the 5th May, the MSC Poesia cruises in, CT2, PoC & the Astor, PoC, CT1.
Kevin, agree re access to Town Hall, surely this could be arranged on these Big Cruise Ship days, one of the very helpful Dover Greeters could be on hand to show the passengers around. It's great that St Mary's Church is open for them
