Yes we have plumbed the depths..
For days I had been hearing hammering and drilling and drilling and hammering. Biff bash biff.. but with the fog wrapped all around us like a blanket one couldnt see what was afoot. But now..as the fog pulls away..I can see the source of all the kerfuffle. A workteam have arrived to revamp and restructure the humble seafront toilets.
Now, over the years this forum has debated toilets like no other, much chattering mileage was had, reams of electronic paper was used up...we were nearly flushed with success several times over with the sheer volume and enthusiasm of the contributions.. from all walks of life. For some reason the local populace extraordinaire like to talk about public toilets..so with due aplomb I am now furnishing a picture of the latest flurry of activity.
They are drilling away the cladding and have breeze-blocked the rear opening

Moving on...
Suddenly without any kind of warning a new full moon was looking back at me the other night through my rear window. Hanging low over the water and looking very orange. The lower it is the orangier it looks..it becomes paler as it rises high into the heavens. Although the moon wasnt going any where I snatched at the pictures.. panicking in case the cloud gobbled it up.
The above is a bit weak but it shows where it was in the sky in relation to the following. Once again specialist equipment would be needed to do this justice but here's my stab at it..

But here we are with a section of the press release showing big increases here with a corresponding decline at Eurotunnel. Perhaps in these figures you can see the reason Eurotunnel wanted to get into the ferry business through its involvement with My Ferry Link.
A section of the press release follows below...
The Port of Dover's strong traffic growth for the first quarter of 2013 has seen Europe's busiest international ferry port regaining market share in the key freight market, as increased consumer choice through the establishment of a third ferry operator in a market that grew by almost 3% last year begins to pay dividends.
Road haulage vehicles (RHV) increased by 6.7% to 518,979 during the first quarter (Q1) of 2013 compared with one year earlier whilst Eurotunnel truck volumes decreased by a significant 9%.
Tim Waggott, Chief Operating Officer, Port of Dover, said: "Dover Harbour Board has been professionally managing the Port of Dover for over 400 years with a focus on delivering great customer service. We are a robust long-term player in the cross-Channel market and, as evidenced by our ongoing £85 million capital investment programme to substantially upgrade the existing ferry terminal, we fully expect to be successfully operating and growing in the years to come."

It was sunny but decidedly nippy yesterday. It still had enough bite and chill in the breeze to whip the skin off the top of me tapioca when I opened the window....( ermmm not really with the tapioca. my mother used to give me tapioca when I was little and I'm still in therapy on account of it !! )
Good to see the oul political battlers Reg and Keefy drifting in to the Sea News thread with anchors aweigh!!
Some of the guys will remember we spoke a few months back about this minor phenomenon in the harbour.
It appeared again yesterday, the picture below is completely un-retouched. This is exactly as it was yesterday, it only lasted for a relatively short while.

I believe our good friend John Mavin (where are you John, hope all well ) said previously that this one was quite a luxurious ship onboard. Once again it's another German ship which is great to see..spreading some of that Euro-gold-dust in our direction. This one is on the small side but if you were making an expensive episode of Hercule Poirot this would be the one to use..it has that gloriously dated look of times gone by..

Further to Vince's note about the Joline, there is a somewhat larger livestock carrier off the port right now. Waiting to enter? It carries large 'Horizon Livestock' lettering on the hull. If so, this could be the first indication that the Joline is not suitable for the berths at Dover and hence a larger ship.
