Hot off the press, I just heard half hour ago that Somerfields was robbed yesterday. What strikes me as a little odd is the fact that it happened in the daytime at some point but they didn't realise until they cashed up in evening! Doesn't say a lot for their level of security if someone can walk in un-noticed, swipe approx £1700 and casually walk out does it?!
I'm actually quite surprised they had that amount of money on one till because its always empty when I go in there.

They were probably too busy chatting to each other about their respective boyfriends; that's all they ever seem interested in.

In fact Jeanette, I made a survey about a week ago and presented it on a thread: Dover's supermarkets have many empty tills, hence we don't need another supermarket in DTIZ. It seems the Council is now cottoning on to this idea, as we can see from the front page. As for the missing money, well...someone is probably using it now to shop...in Somerfields! (or some other supermarket)

I donot agree with either of these posts .I use this store a lot /Its convenient and they do a good delivery service .You can find what you are looking for and they stock all that is needed for day to day living .
Older people like this store as it is small and is not confusing .
I find the staff most helpful .
Dont knock it .We need to keep it .Not everyone has a car .

Sue
You and I have very different views on what constitutes helpful staff, I'm afraid. If I had to rate the customer service of every supermarket in the area, Somerfields would come a resounding last. One or two are OK, the rest are just awful.
And I'm not knocking it, I'm just telling it as I see it. Poor service doesn't need to be ignored, it just needs improvement.

Sue Nicholas, I didn't intend saying we don't need Somerfield, I meant we do not need another supermarket in DTIZ. I also go to Somerfiels (but not yesterday, mind!) and fully agree with you that we need that supermarket, it is very convenient. Sorry for the misinterpretation.
Blimey thats a shocker, i do agree that the sales people dont seem the most happiest ive seen or helpful but as a whole the supermarket is ok. surely someone would of seen something?

Like Sue I do use Somerfields quite a lot and have always found all the staff to be pleasant and helpful. The home delivery service is also very convenient when shopping for four children and they have always done their best to ensure it arrives at the best time for me.
Could it be a matter of how you treat the staff?
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

Howard takes his for a walk aparently but I find just giving them the ocssional smile is good enough.
Have I been wasting all that charm I have lavished on the staff? Bugger.
I am surprised that Jeanette finds Somerfield empty so often. It is always packed when I go in there, admittedly not often, but randomly. Living down this end of the town it is the nearest shop for most of us, including all the people who live in the B & B's on the seafront. I wouldn't say all the staff are helpful but most are and you can get most of what you need. Including the most gorgeous New York Cheesecake. If you haven't tried it, I urge you to do so. YUM

In my experience I always find the shop itself relatively empty but the till areas absolutely packed....that's only because they generally only have one till open though, two at the most. I do tend to only shop there in the mornings but when I have found myself in there in the afternoons there doesn't appear to be much difference.
I couldn't possibly comment on the staff because I know too many of them! Strangely enough though it was only through overhearing the staff gossiping instore yesterday that I found out so many details about the robbery & I didn't even need to know anyone for a change.
Isn't it odd that no one seems concerned about the fact Somerfields were robbed and all everyone can talk about is the level of service!

They'll be insured, Jeanette. Just so long as noone got hurt, that's all that really matters.

Melissa, the only explanation I can give as to how it was done is that someone found a key sticking in an unmanned till, unlocked it and put a hand in!
Jeanette, one could be concerned that Somerfield was robbed, but as I explained to Melissa yesterday, the peson who carried out the thing is probably sitting there now eating many fattening pies and cakes purchased with the proceeds, and might be sitting in a pub boozing the remnants away!
And wondering why the sum is rapidly disappearing!

Unfortunately Jeanette, it's indicative of the society in which we live and becoming ever more so in Dover that nobody gives a damn apart from for themselves. It's the me, me, me society.

tony
i think that it is the fact that no violence was used and nobody hurt, i was in there later that day and there was no talk about it.
it seems to me that alexander may have the explanation for what happened.
