Commons Speaker Michael Martin's outburst yesterday against Labour MP Kate Hoey has prompted two Tory MPs to propose a vote of no confidence in him.
His own actions and inactions during this expense crisis are questionable and his own attitude to expenses are dubious to say the least. He is reported to have commented 'I did not go into politics not to take all I am entitled to' or words to that effect.
He is in charge of the Commons authorities who are responsible for MP expenses. Those officials who have turned a blind eye, been negligent or at worse encouraged abuse all report to him. It is yet to be seen exactly what role and influence he has played is establishing the culture of greed among MPs.
Controversy over Speaker Martin does not end there. He has some serious questions to answer over the arrest of Damian Green and the police raid of his Commons office.
His conduct of affairs on the floor of the Commons is also questioned and is considered not to have exerted his authority in the non-party political manner normally expected of a Speaker.
There are MPs on all sides of the House who believe that he has simply not lived up to the high standard set by his predesessors of all political persuasions.
Will the motion of no confidence result in his resignation? Will MPs decide to take out their own anger, embarrassment, guilt and frustration on him by voting him out of office?
Who will replace him?
Interesting questions- I certainly believe that this appalling man deserves to be dumped and not before time.

I agree a change of Speaker would be appropriate at this particular apt time.

And to balance things, in the Telegraph today, more TORY MP's found with there nose in the trough, so much so Cameron is considering taking action against some!!!!
On the issue of the speaker, yes should be looked at, but unlikely to happen till after general election

mr martin has been sailing too close to the wind for some time, cannot boot him out though.
it has to be resignation or he has to kick the bucket.
we can see why he hangs on to a job that he is not fit for, the expenses for his wifes shopping and the palatial official residence are worth fighting for.
seeing his music hall act yesterday with the useless kate hooey and now today with another labour member brought the
commons into even more disrepute.
Anyone familiar with Podge and Rodge........?

Mr Martin is untouchable then, maybe he has no principles or even cares.

keith
some of your posts are getting rather sad, i have not gone for labour politicians.
this is simply NOT a party issue.
the country in general is up in arms over recent events, not just the expenses issue, prior to that the recession/credit crunch effect.
party comissars can go on scoring points off of each other, but real people are hurt at the moment financially and the fact that our betters are "sorting" themselves out, has come as the last straw.
i hope that the minority extremist parties feed off of this at the forthcoming elctions.

Of course he should go
However he will not, until the next election when his constituents will throw him out if the local party do not deselect him first

I have never done that Keith. I have condemned all those MPs of whatever party who are fiddling their expenses. This thread is all about the Speaker and not the more general expenses issue. There is much wider case against the Speaker.

tomorrow he will be making a speech to the house.
i bet that there is not a word of contrition from him.
he does seem to have made enough out of his position to warrant an abject apology for his actions.

His position has got worse over the weekend with the new allegations against him.

So the Speaker has dodged to no confidence motion using procedural technicalities. All he has done is to call a meeting, yet another meeting...
not good enough.
I can see the calls for the Speaker to go increasing in volume. It is now not a matter of whether he will be Speaker at the time of the elction but whether he will be at the end of May... we will see.
