All good traditions Maggie and some things I absolutley love. But like Chris' suggestion of cockles and whelks (both of which I could eat until they come out of my ears) do we actually 'do' these things? It is impossible to buy cockles and whelks in Dover, which upsets both me and my children, although we take full advantage of the winkles down Shakespeare beach.
Along with loving new things, I worry about our traditions (it's the conservative in me (small c)) By the time my son gets to 18, the fact he won't be able to buy 'mild' is one of my big concerns. I love Anne Briggs but does this make English or just a bit of a geek?
As for Fish and Chips , love it! ...although ironically the best I've ever had are from Leo Burdocks!

strange concept being english,i think that fish and chips should be cooked by cypriots, as a west ham fan i am in the majority of wanting paolo di canio or slavan bilic as the manager.
the thing i miss most when going abroad is a good curry, a shish kebab maybe a sly poteen.
i have to take issue with dt on cockles, whelks and "mild" though.
we must remember that when we go into pubs we have the widest selection of drinks available in the western world, when we go out to eat, the choice is unlimited.
on a recent trip to boulogne, i could not help but notice the lack of restaurants that served anything other than french/english food.
the one that did it for me was one called "indo-pak" claiming to cover all southern asian cusine.

And Jackie always has cockles and muscles on offer in the Louis Armstrong, along with good ales.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

Good point there, but this has been raised many times before on various threads ie 'wet fish', now we are talking about cockles on whelks on a St Patricks thread, it must be lateral thinking?

I didn't know how long ago your trip was Howard.
LD Lines are hoping to introduce a foot-passenger service soon, it was hoped to be from Easter, but it may well be later, I suspect in the summer.
