17:2779305I am one of the unfortunate 1.4 million who have received a tax demand, together with my husband. We are required, as pensioners, to pay back £1,7000 +++
when we were blithely carrying on thinking we were doing everything legally. On Panorama last night they advised that in order to keep straight with your tax "do not retire".
Well, I give the HMRC fair warning, they have a fight on their hands!!!
By the way, the helpline? It isn't.

17:3779309Oh dear! thats a tough one Diana what with Christmas coming up and winter fuel bills and so on. Somebody said something somewhere...must have been on TV that you can refuse to pay, but am not sure how genuine that was. On those 24 hours news programs they fill up the airwaves with almost every tom dick and harry coming on to speak and give advice but whether that advice is accurate or not...
Is there a Citizens Advice bureau in Dover anyone know?

17:4679314Yes there is Paul - it's in Maison Dieu car-park.
I went to see them after I was sacked by Cameron MacSween - good advice they gave me.

18:3679326Diana - go to the tax office and ask for an A19, Extra Statutory Concession.
Basically tell them to swing for it, their fault.
By the way - retiring is OK, go for it, but make sure you get some good advice before and after you so so. You might end up with your tax allowances spread over several sources of income and you do need to check up on it.

10:4779411It would be advisable to write to HMRC as prompted by the tax advisors on Panorama's 'Are You Paying Too Much Tax' aired on the BBC. Insiders from the HMRC have said that £1.5bn of unpaid tax is likely to be written off (cases brought to the HMRC's attention on the programme were written off with an apology), I wish you all the best.

10:5279412The best thing you can do is do what Barry is telling you,and the very good thing he is telling you it for nothing ,if you had gone to his office, there might have been a cost to that, and not only you but we all now what to do. Thank you Barry for the free one.

I think before taking any action you need to be sure of where your going.
Whilst it may be the HM Customs fault, to tell them to SWING FOR IT is hardly likely to get the response you require.
getting the correct forms, talking to them, talking to C.A.B. IS GOOD advice
hope you get it resolved

13:2079437Figuratively tell them to swing for it, not literally - Keith! I explained exactly what needs to be said.
I dont think Diana, at least, is stupid enough to think I said tell them that literally.

13:4879448It would be nice to do though.
As an aside my son, who is in VAT a department that was swallowed by the tax division, has nothing good to say about the tax side, they very inefficient apparently.

11:3479610Barry W: thank you very much for the good advice. What with all the health problems I have this was the very last thing I needed! I promise I will not tell them to swing for it.
My husband had words with them yesterday, during which conversation tax codes were brought up. It appears it is our responsibility to know that our tax codes are correct and that they are being implemented correctly. Ray asked if they did not know what tax codes an individual is given and the reply was "you get the tax codes before we do".

13:1479623Do let me know how you get on Diana (privately if need be on
advice@regency-ifa.co.uk)
I would like to know just how effective the Extra Statutory Concession is in helping you with this.
good luck

15:0679636How on earth is Joe Public supposed to know if they have the right tax code or not, I guess if you have an accountant they would know. I am allocated my tax code by the tax office therefore I assume they have given me the correct one.
Diana, I do so hope you get this sorted and in your favour not theirs.
