20:0039263i remember roger saying that one of the first of his aims as business support manager was to get an actual market in market square.
not an easy task, so many strands to pull together.
we have seen what a great place it can be with the french market, christmas lights switch on etc, let us all give roger all the support we can.

13:4739327Vic, I hope I wasn`t giving any impression of putting Roger down, so you must have misinterpreted it. I don`t know who does what, but just mentioned the market square. For what I do know on here, Roger does look to very much care for Dover, and if there were more like him about in government, I may even start voting again.

16:5239523Just a quickie. Haven`t heard any response as to why the big tv is still not working. And on another happy note, I had a very nice breakfast this morning in Mandy`s cafe, with double bacon/eggs, toast and 2 teas out of one pot, together with happy staff. All for about £3.50.

. Mandys, baguettella, Christian shop, Seasports centre, all recommended, so where should I try next?

17:0839527don;t think that too many people are bothered at present about the screen, too cold to stand around.
i was told that it was just a technical fault, but nothing official.

21:3039562I understand that the Big Screen has a part "blown" and is awaiting delivery. Maybe if it didn't last that long, they ought to order two of what ever it was.
I hope it is mended by June as there a great opportunity for the screen to be a real success as they are going to broadcast a live performance of Carmen from the Royal Opera House.
This is a wonderful opera with some really stirring songs; I intend to talk to the cafes etc round the Market Square hoping thery will stay open to offer pre-opera food and drinks.
More news to follow.

21:4039566that should go down well with the audience awaiting a performance from england in south africa roger.
when i say performance, this should not reflect in any way on the alleged antics of our captain.

23:5939587Whilst I admire the desire to promote culture (or should that be kultcha) I am not sure that it has mass appeal amongst the majority of denizens of our fair town

08:3739590Roger, I think it is a lovely idea. We should not underestimate our masses! Many people I know have thouht they did not like opera - mostly because of its publicity! - but have enjoyed the more catchy numbers and the more memorable bits. It is an opportunity.

08:4739595Maybe Ross we will get people from outside of Dover to come here for a bit of Culture if you think Dover people don't have any - I would have got shot if I had said that; as Bern says, Opera has a bad press for the majority of people, perhaps the "Pop-star to Opera-star on TV now, will help change attitudes.
We need to raise our game and this opera will be one good way of trying to do so.

12:3639614I love opera, especially the really heavy Wagnerian stuff (Die Meistersinger Von Nurenberg
![](/assets/images/forums/emoticons/thumbsup.gif)
) but I'm very aware that this is a passion shared by few of my fellow townsfolk, and I remain rather sceptical that the patrons of Bar Elle will turn out en masse. Still, Carmen is a little lighter!

14:5639627Don`t mind any opera, and I have a few cds. Always wanted to go to one, but never got round to it. Andy, I like the headphones on with Wagner`s Lohengrin, full blast, a favourite of mine for many years, and of course, Hitler`s favourite composer. This may get me down to visit the big screen, (may).

17:3339635I love opera in all its guises be it modern or traditional, Puccini, Delibes, Rossini, Wagner (Apocalypse Now -I love the smell of Napalm first thing in the morning), Verdi and Bizet. my favourite piece of all time is Catalani's 'La Wally' of Diva fame (Orchestre National de l'Opera de Monte-Carlo - Fausto Cleva is my personal best). I've never been an opera snob, My late Dad opened my eyes to classical, opera & jazz.
I'm sure the Big Screen is probably down to someone not paying their TV Licence on time.

19:2939652C'mon Howard, don't be a luddite, everyone loves a lovie. I personally think they all have ego's that are way to big for their boots. Self serving publicity seekers most of them. I think the Taliban are right when it comes to arts and culture, who needs it?
