Live in the West live by the laws traditions and culture ,just as we would have to,live with the Eastern way of life . Whatever Politicians tell us it's been plain to see this past 20 yrs or so that multiculturism is not working anymore as certain ppl want us to live by the same rules that they supposedly have run away from .Burkinis are the most ludicrous garment ever invented for Women but looking at some men should be them up wearing it an all .After all they are MAN made !

Certainly a ridiculous looking garment and anything to do with Islam makes French people nervous, not surprisingly with recent events. French governments have prepared the ground for radicalisation by importing people from their old colonies to do jobs that most French people won't do and dumping them in rabbit hutch flats out in the suburbs with no chance of self improvement.

I have no objection at all to the burkini if that is what the devout Muslim woman wants to wear on the beach.
I do agree they look silly but at least these women are not veiled that item I do object to on mainly security grounds.

It's the Men that want Women covered from head to foot .And no where in the Koran does it say women should be covered .wearing the burka and ha jib came about with nomads travelling across the desert and it protected the face from sandstorms .Does anyone know when Dover was struck by a sandstorm ?

Post 5 is correct head/face coverings are not a religious thing but cultural. There is no way I would converse with anyone hiding their face unless they were the Lone Ranger,Batman or Zorro as they were a force for good.

That was the Victorian era was the way things were back then .George V despised shortened dresses ,& showed his displeasure when Queen Mary shortened her dresses ,she went back to wearing long until after he died .We are now in the 21 st century where things are a lot more liberal

Surely down to the individual what they wish to wear.
Given the almost pornographic costumes some wear on the beach a little bit of decorum, modesty and dare i say it mystery would not go amiss

CBP's history of the Burqa is a little wide of the mark, the wearing of hijab, burqa, niqab etc came about from a social elite of women wanting to express there status, long loose clothing is purely the most comfortable and cool clothing in hot climates.
There are at least two references to covering up in the koran and it is how these are interpreted that is a huge topic of debate amongst Islamic scholars.
Surveys in the East and West suggest most Muslim women choose to cover up for various reason to do with culture, religion and self expression of course some are dictated to by the fathers, brothers, husbands and sons but this is seen to be a minority.
While I agree the Burkini is a ridiculous garment I believe it is up to the individual.

If the below is a burkini then I think the French may be being a bit heavy handed. Would I be arrested if I turned up wearing peddle pushers, a top and a hat? If I was choosing what to wear myself and not being forced.

I have no problem with the burkini or any other modest swimwear, as long as it is not compulsary. Which brings me to another point: in many Muslim countries female visitors are obliged to wear a headscarf to comply with Muslim tradition, even if they are not Muslim. Now this does sound like the burkini argument in reverse. Can we a have a flat playing field here? no burkina ban here and no headscarf imposition on non-Muslims in Muslim countries? Why do we silently comply to Muslim requirments and when we apply our traditions they complain like mad?
