Walking past the Crypt yesterday I noticed that as well as the normal rubbish that has accumulated over the years some more is being added. Fresh offcutts of plasterboard and timber have also been added.
Now I don't want to cast aspersions but it may just be coincidence that the former carpet shop next door is having some internal renovations.

Casting my mind back I seem to vaguely recall someone planning to open a fish and chip shop in that unit.

Getting back to the Crypt itself the last I heard was that demolition of the old amusement arcade was being sought which would mean the scaffolding coming down and the site being cleared for heritage assessment.

Terry, The Crypt had a s.215 Notice served on it thanks, I believe, to the efforts of Pat Sherratt (Dover Society) who peruaded DDC, using a model from Hastings that obtained considerable success there, to get property owners to clean up untidy and often neglected buildings. DDC has had some success by way of these Notices in trying, initally, to persuade owners to carry out the necessary work within a set timescale or, as a last resort, by enfocement action.
The problem with the Crypt is that it is a Mediaeval Undercroft and Grade II Listed.
This should not preclude the owner from tidying up this monumental eyesore visible to many a visitor to the area. The same could be said of the building alongside (can't recall the name of it at present) that faces Townwall Street that has been empty and in a poor state or repair for years.
Like most things, action to enforce the likes of s.215 Notices takes time, resources and cash. Something that Councils these days have increasingly little of, whilst resources are allocated to more 'pressing' and urgent needs (as they see it).
I know Pat reads this forum and will correct me if I am incorrect in any of the above.

Thanks Patrick. Yes I am aware of the efforts of the Dover Society. I'm just saddened that the site seems to be a dumping ground for fly tippers. It's a pity that I didn't have a camera with me on Friday when there were dusty footprints between the adjacent sites.

The former amusement arcade is part of the Jimmy Godden estate which makes things a bit complicated I would imagine.

I wonder if the persons who dumped the rubbish know of the tragic story of this site, maybe they wouldnt be so disrespectful if they knew.

By 1991, Folkestone businessman, Jimmy Godden, owned the site and he wished to erect two advertising hoardings. At the same time, there was a need for a sewer to be laid in connection with the new A20 and it was proposed to demolish part of the undercroft. Mr Godden was given temporary planning permission for the advertisement hoardings but the line of the sewer had to be resited to avoid the undercroft. Shortly after, while clearing the ground for the A20 underpass archaeologists re-opened the undercroft and made a detailed description. It was then resealed.

Mr Godden applied, in 1997, to place an advertising hoarding on part of the site such that the hoarding would face York Street and Townwall Street roundabout so permission was refused. Two years later, in 1999, Dover District Council claimed that the long promised Dover Town Centre Investment Zone would finally begin. This included the use compulsory purchase powers to speed up the development of the Bench Street site, at the time of writing nothing has happened.

I can see nothing wrong it simply shows how awful the neglect is all that rubbish and dead branches just left there, it is a shame your wife was upset.

It's unrealistic to stop showing places where people have died.
What this video should do is force one of the local councils / councillors to act to have the site tided up and protected (possibly a "tidy ruin" like old St James church).
Plus the owners prosecuted and if it's the people next door fly-tipping, then them too.

There's more building material there this morning. Compare this with the original picture in post #1.
More dusty footprints.

Some-one should be doing something about this. There are enough air-heads and councillors that drop into this Forum.
The Poor Crypt echoes the shitiness and disrespect, that underlies the tragedy of this poor Town.
The Picture shows, obvious Fly-Tipping, which is a criminal offence anyway.

I fail to see what more can be done, post 4 clearly states that the owners have been served notice by DDC to clear the site and so far there has been no sign of it. They can take it to court but from past experience the fines have been so derisory that property owners may find it cheaper to pay up rather than take action.

Surely apart from investigation and hopefully prosecution for the latest flytipping.
I thought councils after having served notice and notice period had elapsed were able to undertake clearance and have the costs recouped through the courts the derisory fine is on top of those costs?
