Alexander, the increase in traffic will come whether T2 is built or not, so the emissions problem is completely irrelevant to this project.
Accepting you object to the T2 construction project, what is your plan to improve matters and create new jobs?

Sid, I think I hit a point in my representation to London, as there are binding laws in Parliament concerning carbon emmissions. The whole theme with Dover Port expansion has nothing to do with creating new jobs, this subject not being part either of DHB's nor gov.'s declared intentions. It has to do with port expansion so as to double port traffic by way of cars and heavy freight vehicles over the next 30 years! In my representation to London I mentioned various points, all of which have been expressly acknowledged in the reply I received and will be furthered on to the Secretary of State for consideration, or may-be already have been by now.
As to port expansion, I proposed that if it is required of Dover to accept further freight and to channel it through Western Docks, then that this be done by rail, by bringing back the rail link, as the railway passes right close to the Western Docks. I proposed a kind of rail-carriage that has a low chassis and can carry lories under the tunnel, or, the use of freight containers that can be unloaded from ships and stored at Western Docks and subsequently loaded onto rail-carriages, and vice versa. Both of these technicle possibilities are already existing and in use in the world, neither are a novelty, and both could be appled to western Docks!
The creation of jobs as a result of port expansion and operation is a forgone conclusion, Sid! However it was not the object of DHB's initial plans, which was port expansion so as to double the Port-traffic within thirty years.
My point was, that this would imply doubling carbon emmissions, and therefore a rail link would be within reasonable acceptance to prevent this, however not by privatising the port, as people using it for freight should also pay for the Port-service, hence Dover should do well from it, as would Kent as County and the national Treasury. Therefore, why should we sell our Port when it would bring in good revenues? Would you sell an insurance that earns you ten thousand pounds a year, Sid, for a one time payment of five thousand pounds? I don't don't think you would!
But iof you are predicting a doubling of traffic through th port over a period of 30 years, the emissions won't necessarily double. Why? Low emission fuels will be very common within the next 5 years and zero emission fuels within 15 years, maybe sooner. So, as I said, emission levels are irrelevant when considering a 30 year timespan.
Agree about using rail, but, that has failed before because road is just so much more convenient. Even a number of major airlines use road transport for their freight in Europe as it means lower costs and higher customer satisfaction. Fact is, for freight traffic, rail struggles to compete with road.
Extra jobs, well, you admit they will come.
For the record, I am totally against selling the Port of Dover and Dartford Crossings.

Southampton`s version of our Southern House. Ex-LSWR buildings.
Rail traffic comes in and out on a single line to the left. In years gone by, they`d be rails where I`m standing, and many more besides. As I`ve said before, pity we can`t twin with Southampton and share more of the work. Interesting port.

The rail track was the first thing to be removed when setting up the cruise terminal and many people, including myself, were surprised at DHB's short sightedness.
With tracks already in place, a restored old steam engine and a couple of carriages to ferry cruise passengers to or from Dover Priory would have been a big hit for the terminal and Dover in general.
The only thing they offered passengers in the first few years, was busses into Canterbury.
Dover can't compete with Southampton. Not in winter anyway. Cruise companies will always opt for Southampton during the winter months, because of its position and access. That's not to say it can't become a busier port but cruise companies run Brochures and itineraries, as much as 5 years in advance. Unless Dover can convince these businesses of their intention to improve Dover for tourism, then they will be reluctant to add Dover as a visiting port of call. They are the extra cruises that Dover needs.
That's why Rogers work on tourism for Dover was so important and he should have got more support, in my view.

Sadly my voice on tourism is not being heard any more and Dover is the loser for it I believe.
There is much to do and much that should be done on a number of areas, but the Chamber of Commerce won't be doing any of it. In charge of Tourism ? I don't think so, they simply have no idea.

Cruise lines will certainly gravitate to Southampton in the winter months when their itineraries are inevitably westward bound - there's not much demand for Baltic or round-UK cruises in the winter! But I agree with Gary, Dover has more to offer than Southampton as a port of call visit. However, this certainly does require investment in the town itself and a more co-ordinated approach to tourism. Roger's spot on in that this should be a full-time role for someone, or certainly a more co-ordinated approach between the DHB, DDC and DTC to ensure that the town can maximise the benefit of cruise passengers. You only have to look at some of the buildings that greet the passengers in the Market Square to understand we've got a mountain to climb. The bus from the cruise terminals drops them off opposite the old Job Centre that has been closed for at least twenty years to my mind! As has been commented before, we also need to encourage more shops to open on a Sunday.

That's odd. My Web content manager in Nigeria, Radek Dutkowski, was from Warsaw, and he never mentioned girls. All he talked about was the wonderful job he had made of the LOT website. Guess that would make him either gay, or a geek! I'll ask him.
