That was very good performance which bodes well for the next two games at least. USA were lucky tonight, one speculative shot sadly fumbled by the England 'keeper, and one bringing a fantastic save, otherwise they didn't really get a look in.
I thought both Lennon and SWP proved tonight they don't have the necssary class to play for England; SWP in particular was dreadful. It's only when you see that young talent fail so miserably do you realise how muhc Beckham brought to the team in terms of quality delivery to the forwards.
Still, I'm rather upbeat, we didn't lose and still have a good chance of winning the next two games and topping the group.

i would go along with that, sean wright phillips has never impresses me, talented but not that extra drive that makes a winner.
rob green was brought in over david "calamity" james, purely because he is not one to make a "howler", sods law that makes him to choose tonight to make one.

Watched it on ITV HD who went to a commercial break seconds before we scored

the highlight of the game! We played OK but showed nothing to indicate we can win the tournament.

Do we realy OVER HYPE these games and expect to much?
next door alwayshas parties whenever England play lots of people all expecting England to win.
Although I have sympathy for Green he made a fantastic save later in the game which most wont remember, prefering more to home in on his mistake.
Had he not made that save later in the game we could not be looking at no points.
It was a good England performance world beaters I'm not so sure.

yes Keef me oul mucker..good to see you yesterday over mixing with us plebs in pencester!lol
But yes he made a very good save. The ball was going in and he knocked it onto the post. Very nearly a losing game for England.
MRP yes that story is running on the news this morning. How could they do that...its a backward step for commercial broadcasting to break such a game. That was the real 'howler' last night...I know ITV need money but thats ridiculous. Fortunately I watched it bog standard and saw it all.

England have to play alot better than that even to get to the next round, some of Englands players did not play the full 90mins and should have been taken off.

As Isaid VIC we prob expect to much of our national sides.
Long gone are the days of national pride.
Don't agree VIC on your overall view, I think England did enough to pick up the points, the howler by Green didn't help.
They will need to pick themselves up and start over, all is not lost, they still can bothg qualify and head the group.
IT's not the best result, but its not the worst.
Lets get behind England, but not expect to much of them.

2 teams from our group qualify to go through to the next round so all we want to do is top the group to avoid other top sides from other qualifying groups by beating the next 2 teams in our own group .Simple

Well, having watched every game so far, England and Argentina are so much better than the rest. Oddly enough, both teams outplayed their opponents but were unable to get more than one goal.
Taking into account these are the first games of the tournament for all, allowance must be made for form, nerves, fitness etc., plus ability to improve. On that score England, Argentina and France all look well capable of upping the standard. However, the French are doing what we expect of the Dutch, and arguing amongst themselves and unless they can sort that out, they will be flying home sooner than they would like.
Only a few matches played, but this is already shaping to be an extremely excititng and enjoyable tournament which openend with the best opening goal of any World Cup I have followed.
Right, got stuff to do before today's games start. Luvving it!!!!!!!!!!!
