The Falstaff's name is changing to The Fleurs if I remember last weeks Dover Express article correctly.

The Red Lion didn't shut, so I assume there's a manager in place. There's now a sign outside saying "price reductions" etc.
What happened with the Ellie? It was meant to be a micro pub I think, but I've a feeling it hasn't opened?

I've just been told that Keith the ex-landlord of the Red Lion passed away on Monday.

Sadly, that is correct Karlos. The pub has now been taken over, but as yet I haven't had chance to call in. I know the tenant, so it'll be interesting to see how he's doing.

I see in the Dover Express that a Mr Peter Garstin is looking to open a micro pub/brewery at 3 Bench Street.

So, is it good news, or bad?

I heard that a couple of months ago but didn't believe it. I thought that Peter was enjoying retirement.

The new owner of The Hope Inn at Lydden (Pastor Marcus Abbott of the Living Well Church) has put in a
planning application to convert it to residential use, with another house built on what remains of the car park. It would make an ideal micropub, please use the link to object if you don't want another local to go.

The Lydden Hope shut about 3 years ago and a big chunk of it has been demolished to make way for a previous application to build about 4 houses. I didn't see the need to knock any of it down as there was already a wide entrance.

If the pub is busy it should stay open, if it is quiet change of use should be allowed. No pub have to stay open if there are not enough customers to make it a viable business.
Out of interest did plenty of villagers from Lydden use The Hope on a regular basis or only now and then.

Speaking as an ex Dovorian of 50+ years, pub wise the town has deteriorated somewhat Since i started to have the odd pint or three in the mid '60s onwards. I recall with affection the Prince Louis, Golden Lion, Metropolitan Bars, Roman Quay, Crypt, Shakespeare Bars and of course the beloved Brittania (old Ted Perry must have turned in his grave seeing this fine business completely messed up!
On my frequent visits to the town the only establishment I frequent is 'Blakes', decent selection of beers and food in a convivial atmosphere. I believe I am correct in thinking that Mr Garstin was the former landlord and whilst it is good now - it was better under his management, I wish him well and look forward to visiting the new micro pub in Bench Street.
Obviously, Dover is not unique in this matter it's a national problem - if we don't use them we loose them!
