09:3631698I am not sure why anyone would think the "other" party is so different.

10:4131699The Labour goverment has had a hard time, but has stuck with it and will see us through the recession, the people will realise that altough times have been hard that Gordon Brown is a leader recognised throughout the world who lead on the recovery. The only reason we have not finally got out of it is the amount of credit we get ourselves into, and the housing market here is fixed on owning houses which is unusual on the continent.
I know very few who remember the last Tory goverment who would EVER vote for them again.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

11:0831702JHG - We have discussed this many times before and you remain in denial of the serious errors by Gordon Brown that have made our economic situation far worse than it should be.
Fortunately most people are not making that mistake. Indeed even in that once solid Labour area Wales, a big swing to the Conservatives is expected to more than treble our seats.
http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/2009/10/27/poll-predicts-labour-trouncing-91466-25020815/
Polling is also showing an above national average swing to the Conservatives in the North of England, another Labour heartland.
Face up to it you lot are going to be out at the next election with the only area of doubt being the scale of Labour defeat.

14:1331703Just on the original post of the count
I suppose the result should be known asap
but being at counts so many times i do find them a bore even in labours winning days.
But for those political anoraks i suppose its good, and i think having had the election the results should be heard on the thursday night/friday morning
I hope Dover will agree to this, but thats up to the conservative admin that barryw is party to so has some influence?

16:3631734Looking at both of the "main" parties, there is so little to choose between them in terms of crassness and greed that voting for either seems a waste of energy. Now - if a Monster Raving Loony would like to stand, I'd be there. I will vote, of course I will - it matters than we use our democratic voting rights. But they are becoming increasingly meaningless as we become less and less empowered as the big monoliths with all the money run things and pull the puppets strings in Westminster.
Disillusioned? No. Simply past the first flush or two (or several!!!!) of youth!!!

18:1431754the first sentence of bern's post no.25 sums it up for me and a lot of people.
the politicians have their snouts even deeper in the trough, gwyn, chas and victor will find out when they start door knocking next april.
i certainly have no confidence in any of the parties at present.
they all talk of cuts in this that and the other, but when asked for specifics, they prevaricate.
i listen to the blue talk of less government, then in turn on the box and hear the shadow chancellor talking about
restricting bonuses in banks.
what is that if not the heavy hand of government?

18:1931755So you would prefer the bank bonuses not to be restricted then, Howard?
I dont like the heavy hand and I would not interfere in the way GO has done so in that case.
An interesting conumdrum though, to get less Government as an aim, initially the new Government will have to impose the heavy hand of Government!!!
I notice that it is mainly left leaning voters who come out with all this 'fed up with them all' stuff. Fine if it stops the re-election of the present useless bunch of wasters misgoverning this country.

20:2431766as you know very well barry, i would fully support any bonus capping at banks.
i am railing against the hypocricy.
re; your last paragraph, you may get rather a shock at the thoughts of real people of all political persuasions at the reecent shenanigans.
the rest of us have to pay to get our moats cleaned.

08:1031788HOWARD
IN your last sentence I know Barrywe does lol
On the question of politcal parties, this is not going to be about any party winning an election, its going to be about how wide will apathy go?
We could see the biggest ever defection to non voting.
And thats sad for democracy, which has been hard fought for

thats yet to be seen< sadly its not true to wh~at the everyday person is saying a lot more people than ever before won't be voting and whatever political background you come from(if your honest) it's sad, and will take a long time(
if ever)to rectify

14:4031821Actually howard, the 1997 turnout was quite low, before that they were higher. My 'since 1997' remark was meant to be inclusive of 1997.
Here, for the record, are the electoral turnouts since 1979:
1979 - 76%
1983 - 72.7%
1987 - 75.3%
1992 - 77.7%
1997 - 71.4%
2001 - 59.4%
2005 - 61.4%
The low turnouts in 2001 and 2005 were despite a big increase in postal votes, demonstrating that the manner of how votes are cast has no real impact. There was a doubling in postal votes in 2001 to 5.2% of those cast while in 2005 they increased to a staggering 14.6% of those cast along with many concerns of fraud.

15:3231824And still I see nothing to draw me to any of the major parties, only tit-for-tat grubbing around on all sides.
