I have it on good authority that Wilkinsons are opening in Dover in the old Woolworths Building. They are also advertising for jobs should anyone wish to enquire at the job centre.

Fantastic, I love Wilkinsons! But it is interesting that Wilkinsons are so successful but Woolworths weren't. They are both very similar. I wonder why.

I don't think I've ever been in a Wilkinsons. Are the prices quite reasonable?
The CCTV in the old Woolies building has been burning away now for four months, the monitor visible just inside the door. So much wasted power for an empty shop. Were they expecting hoards of late night brick thieves?

What about Morrisons open by Xmas?
Nuff said.

Something's going on in the old B&Q car park - I presume it's preparation for Morrisons?
Phil - yes Wilkinsons is excellent value for money and sell a huge range of household goods. Will be competition for Pound-stretcher though. Hopefully there's enough business for both.

wilkinsons are usually a lot bigger than our poundstretcher branch.
as a matter of interest, i was in the latter this morning and they had some "woolworths" "worth it" products on their shelves.
selling for the same prices as woollies did.

There is a big Wilkinsons in Canterbury and the prices are extremely reasonable, its very popular and widely used by the university students there. My girls have always gone there to buy a lot of their school/uni stationary stuff as it is very affordable for the students pocket. Great news that one will be on the old Woolies site here in Dover

the golden palace chinese shop in pencester road is having a rebirth as a fish and chip resturant acording to a big sign in the window,it will opening soon.
Hopefully the Wilkinsons idea will come to fruition. We need more in Dover. Anything to bring the heart back to the town.

I took a trip to Canterbury last weekend to check out Wilkinsons and cast an eye over what they get up to there tourist wise. The Wilkinsons shop looks very good. I have to be honest I hadnt heard the name before til it was mentioned on here. I live a sheletered life far away from the shopping precinct clearly. But Wilkinsons as it transpires would be a terrific replacement for Woolworths in our own central area here, so hopefully it will come to fruition. We desperately need to keep inner Dover afloat. Wilkinsons would help greatly. So fingers crossed on that. With Morrisons too...my gawd are we on the up!!?...no DTIZ but maybe we are beginning not to need it, beginning not to care, as it failed to deliver when we needed it most.
Just a brief word on the tourism thing...Canterbury have it sussed. Busload after busload arrive, but there is lots to offer. Shops to die for...I hadnt realised quite how good it was as havent been there in years. I was right beforewhen I advised Roger not to push Dover's shopping to the affluent cruise visitor...as its so poor. One cant be blinkered even in a good cause.

Yes Paul you only have to stand at the bus station to see where the people come from .The 15 to Canterbury is nearly always full every thirty minutes out of Dover

question should be why can Canterbury provide and Dover cant?

Simple answer to that Keith, Canterbury has a good variety of shops, restaurants and pubs, Dover has not.

a bit unfair to compare a city like canterbury with a well renowned cathedral and all the chaucer stuff with dover

I think Keith's question was why can't we provide good shops, pubs and restaurants like Canterbury.
Apart from Canterbury being a City with a GOOD reputation, it still "only" has a cathedral and shopping to attract people, but it works -even people from Dover go there.
Has it anything to do with the spend in the Town ? of course it has. Other businesses see how well Canterbury shops are doing so go there to open their business; because too many local people do not support what we do have here in Dover, you can't keep asking why others Towns have better shops.
Dover has a much more diverse history and historic sites and attractions; we all know what they are, but others (most of them) outside of Dover do not, so obviously we are not promoting the Town properly/successfully.
Paul and others tell me not to push the shopping side of Dover cos it's crap anyway, but I have 39 businesses confirmed for my leaflet and I wouldn't say any of them are crap - some are better than others it's true, but in any league of businesses, even football teams, some will be better than others.
Shop local - use it or lose it.
Roger
Well said Roger - Dover has as much if not more to offer than Canterbury in terms of history and interest but fails to market itself and investment is tardy and absent. We seriously need to big it up - that may or may not include trying to hook big name shops, but is certainly should include marketing its assets properly.
