Nothing; it's a sensible provision. Now government has to say what things will look like on 1st January 2021 so that commerce has a design spec. which it can work to and get ready in time - in other words, no putting the feet up; things have gone from 'not a chance' to 'it's going to be tight'. Dr Fox can also beaver away getting replacement trade deals ready to roll, so that we move seamlessly from the EU one with, say, Mexico, to a UK one with them.
BTW, Charlie talks a lot about investing in systems, and rightly so, but there is also the question of government pump-priming so that customs agents and the like (UK haulers, even) can take on more staff.

The deal will please businesses, unions, us lot in East Kent and all politicians other than hard line Eurosceptics who should not be underestimated in their fervour. Staves off the Irish border problem for a lot longer.

Yes, I don't understand this hard line Eurosceptic stance; guys, your view prevailed - don't muck it up for the sake of a few months that are necessary for everyone to get their houses in order.

I thought Scottish politicians in the main wanted to stay in the EU but now we hear them wanting to "take back control" of their seas!! Two years is too much to wait for them, anyway from what I was told by a learned chum a few years back fishing rights are rather more complicated than they seem and there have been agreements between nations that predate the EU.

Courtesy of the Telegraph - all very predictable.
Jacob Rees-Mogg, leader of a 60-strong group of Eurosceptic Conservative MPs, and others are due to board a boat and pass by Parliament throwing fish into the Thames in protest at the alleged “sellout”. A Brexit transition deal agreed with Brussels allows the EU to maintain control of Britain’s territorial waters until the end of 2020, which protestors described as “a potential death sentence” for the British fishing fleet.
Ruth Davidson, the Scottish Conservatives leader, joined the growing rebellion as she warned Mrs May that the 13 Tory MPs north of the border will oppose any Brexit deal that “fails to deliver full control over fish stocks and vessel access”. Douglas Ross, the Moray MP, said: “It would be easier to get someone to drink a pint of cold sick than to sell this as a success.” The controversy over fishing rights was one of a series of climb-downs announced by Brexit Secretary David Davis ahead of a meeting of EU leaders this week to ratify the transition deal.
The protest will draw comparisons to the Brexit referendum row between Bob Geldof and Nigel Farage. Mrs May, who wrote to European Council President Donald Tusk supporting the progress made by negotiators, also abandoned her personal pledge that free movement would end on Brexit day in March next year. EU migrants arriving during the transition period will now have the same rights as those arriving before Brexit.

All this talk of taking back control of our fish is nothing more than a red herring.

Good heavens, JRM is the chap who got 53.6% of votes on a 75.7% turnout. There must be something in the water down West and it ain't fish.

Captain Haddock wrote:The period is slightly shorter than the British government had initially suggested, but allows the UK to negotiate new trade deals that would come into effect at the end of the transition. (Since trade deals are handled by the EU on behalf of all members, the UK is not allowed to negotiate new ones as long as it remains in the bloc.) There has been an agreement on the UK’s financial settlement as well as the rights of EU citizens living in the UK (and vice versa)—people who move during the transition period have the same rights as people who settled before Brexit.
What's not to like?

Farage made himself look rather silly today with his publicity stunt on the Thames, this is the same man that was on the fishery quota committee in Brussels but never turned up for the meetings.
