Vicarage to St Mary the Virgin (Revd David Ridley)
I had often wondered what the original Vicarage was like as just down the road from me. So thanks for the super pic.

10:0466882I have been thinking about this one. The shop in the picture was a furniture store, and I just cannot remember the name. My husband says it was Court's but I think it was something else before that. I know it was not Turnpenny's because that was further up the town.

Hello Victor Matcham.
Are you the same Victor Matcham that attended Astor Avenue Secondary School from about 1954 - 1957. If so this is Christopher Simpson to whom you once sold a glove puppet when we were in John Thurston's Class.
Best wishes
Chris

If you want your money back Christopher, you'd better be quick, Vic is moving to the far north of Scotland soon!

Hello Peter,
Thanks for that. I think I have had my money's worth from it and goodness only knows where it is now! Victor was always on the look out for a quick deal I seem to remember - surprised he didn't go into banking!!

Hello Victor. Is that correct that you are about to move to Scotland? Meeting up may be difficult as I am now living in Derby.
After leaving Astor Avenue I took up an apprenticeship at Ashford Railway Works (no longer there). I subsequently became an estimator (construction of railway vehicles and general engineering) later moving to Derby as a Sales & Contracts Engineer for Railway wagons & coaches when the old Ashford works closed down. I finished up as a Commercial Manager for railway coaches when British Rail Engineering Ltd was taken over by ASEA Brown Boveri and took early retirement when redundancy loomed and our "British Railways" was broken up into franchises. The company lives on as Bombardier, however, as the only Railway rollingstock manufacturer in the UK.
Best wishes

Chris, I was also at the Ashford railway works from 1972 till it closed it 1981 I was a welder in the long shop I am now 73 after the railway works closed I went on to work in Germany..Both my wife and myself spend some time in the highlands each year and are off again soon.Thats all I can say about that at this time apart from we love it up there. We also spend time in Stoke city which is not that far from you so just maybe we will meet up again. At Ashford Mr REG/Davis who only had one eye was our boss .I also worked in the docks in Wales on rolling stock which we made for overseas in the workshop then taken by rail down to Wales where we had to get them ready for shipping them out.

Wow!! what a coincidence - I never even knew you were there. I too spent part of my apprenticeship under Reg Davis in the tool room. I am now 74 (7th July this year). I spent some time working as an ultrasonic inspector in Wales, testing the axles on locomotives for flaws, at the Cardiff Canton Diesel depot during the 1960s.
Yes Stoke is very near to Derby, would love to see you again.
Best wishes

Can anyone remember the full name of the grocers that was in a row of shops in the Folkestone Road, Dover, near the Priory Station?
Also the full name of the grocer's shop in the row of shops in the Elms Vale, near to Eaton Road junction? Would love to see any pictures.
