When I went down the town at 07.00 this morning the traffic was queuing along Maison Dieu from Pencester. The A20 was totally clogged. This is what the BBC said:-
Surely that should be mismanagement?

Every road leading into Dover is at an absolute standstill this morning. Good luck if you need to travel anywhere this morning.

Traffic is backed up to Buckland Bridge, and Green Lane/Brookfield Avenue where all the locals are taking the back roads.

Folkestone Road appears OK but Regatta attendance must take a hit.

Just been down to the front and Folkestone Road, York Street, Snargate Street and Townwall Street are completely clear. I was told the folkestone buses were all delayed by gridlock in Folkestone!!

The reason is that Le Touquet treaty means that we have the French border control on our side of the channel and they have stepped up checks again so there is an exceptional security situation at French border controls situated within the Port.
French Border Authorities have been operating at a heightened level of security. However, the French border control booths have been seriously understaffed overnight with only three booths available for tourists out of a potential seven.
At one stage, only one French officer was available to check passengers on hundreds of coaches, resulting in each coach taking 40 minutes to process.
The Port of Dover, which as you know, has no authority over French border operations, has raised concerns over French manning levels with the UK Government earlier this week and the Government, in turn, raised the issue with its French counterparts.
The situation is really frustrating for everyone. The port is doing all that it can as a responsible port operator and Tim Waggott has just spoken with Charlie Elphicke to help escalate this once again at Government level.

I have just heard an operations Manager Highways agency .He refused to speak to the radio presenter and when he did speak to who ever his media skills were nil.Apparently the Highways agency had not given out any information to radio Kent .Disgraceful.I understand the misery of the people stuck on the -A20and M20 but it causes so much inconvenience for the locals. My son and his family have walked to the regatta and back from River and picking up some shopping for me.The bus service you cannot rely on as it comes from Canterbury and understandably they cannot keep to time. The whole of Dover and the surrounding villages suffer.Already today a Lorry has gone into the Kearsney Bridge.
I listened to a bus operator and he was saying over in France Lorries donot travel on the roads over the weekend.Im not aware of this but at least it would be motorists.on the roads Maybe that's why we donot have enough French officials looking at passports as they think they are still in France.
I hope the regatta is not suffering.

As far back as I can remember trucks have been banned from driving in France on a Sunday, pretty certain that they can drive on a Saturday.

Sue I have just been reading about stall holders not able to attend and locals not even attempting to visit the Regatta and all because they can not face the traffic problems.
The French should have increased those justifiably checking the vehicles and the police and Highway Authority should have foreseen the chaos and acted earlier.
The trouble is they never seem to learn from the traffic chaos this town has suffered in the not to distant past, or is it that they just do not care as those in charge are not personally affected.
