Indeed, Gary. I don't think Mr Rudd was talking about bona fide immigrants, just a tiny minority of extremists.

All the comments so far show support for this (Ozzie) approach and particularly pertinent is Ian's "When in Rome".
I can't believe we allow ourselves and our troops to be denegrated so much by people who come to this country (whether legally or illegally) because they can't do that self same thing in their own country.
People who are not with us, must be against us; people who are against us, shouldn't be here: live by our laws and rules or simply don't live here.
There's nothing racist in that, just common sense.
Carrying on with their own religion and culture is not a problem, in fact the diversity can enrich our society, but our own established customs, laws and religion must be respected.

My view as a pleb for what its worth, we have always had immigration, under all shades of Govts.
Its here to stay, Whilst I would agree people coming into the country should abide by British law, its the tolerance that comes into question.
If you talk to locals some have the opinion that immigrants must take the Bri-tish way of life, well thats NOT tolerating other faiths or beliefs, and so whilst others should respect the British way of life, in my humble opinion we should also respect others beliefs and faiths.
If people are found guilty who ever they are they shoiuld be dealt with, and if deported if it comes to the mpore violent cases.
I'm afraid the demonstration yesterday in the town where the army was returning was ill informed and im afraid it doesn't help the freedom of speech.
I do fight for everyones rioght to post/.protest but i feel those protesters yesterday did themselves no justice at all

Immigrants should integrate and adopt the British way of life. That does not mean they should change their religion incidentally. The problem we have is the failed experiment with multiculturalism which ignores the 'common bond' of a common culture. The pc extremists hang on the some idiotic ideas that the majority culture should make way for the immigrant cultures. This does not ignore the fact that culture is always gradually evolving anyway but that is not the same as some of the attempts we see to undermine traditional British culture.
It is incidents like the events in Luton that make the average brit less tolerant.I am all for freedom of speech, but inciting anger, thats another thing.

I don't think the muslim community would take too kindly to a demonstration in Brick Lane which accused all asians of being 'bombay or bali bombers' or 'London tube terrorists..So to call the army 'basra butchers'was in my opinion a step too far and a step closer to commiting an offence under the Terrorism Act to 'incite racial hatred and violence'.
Free speech is super so longs as it doesn't step on another man's freedom.

There is toleration and then there is giving up our own ways of life. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and lifestyles without having to change the laws to do it. If you don't drink you do not have to walk into a pub and order a pint but those of us that do can, it is freedom of choice. Expecting us to adapt society just to avoid 'offending' extremists is nonsense and yet we seem to be slowly doing it in the name of tolerance.
It was interesting to see the leader of that protest interviewed on GMTV this morning, not for the rubbish he was spouting but to see the normally laid-back Kate Galloway so nearly losing it.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

i cannot understand why the police did not step in and arrest the ringleaders.
that regiment must have suffered casualties during the conflict, to get abused arriving back home must have been very hard to take.
