12:5239315The project has actually been a lotn longer than 11 years. I was on the Council's Land Committee in 1983 when we have a meeting in the area of the DTIZ and agreed a process to start work towards a re-development. There was a tangled web of leases, under leases and so on that all needed to be brought into alignment and also is was decided that the Council should start accumulating land. We said then that it was at least a 20 year project.
The fact is that it is a complex site bedvilled with a whole lot of issues. Like you I want to see progress fats and I know for a fact that DDC leadership feel the same and are as frustrated as everyone else.

13:0239317I'm sure there are many frustrations over this, Barry. My point was that if ASDA have walked/been axed couldn't we now look at the whole development again and put in a new leisure centre where ASDA was to have been. You certainly have the expertise, given your Land Committee experience, to say whether its feasible. Funding, I know, is a separate issue, but I have to say that the location would seem to be good.

14:3539329I do not know how you can blame the Town Council for the toilet closure, The Town Council do not own the loo's, we do not have the keys to the loo's, we have no control over the loo's, (facts)

14:3639330Personally a leisure centre seems a silly idea have no green space !!
Unfortunately the only way £millions are going to found to buy and demolish Burlington House and the multi-story will be via a major shop investor...
Having said that why not have the proposed shops that were turned down at Whitfield there ?
Been nice knowing you :)

14:4539332Andy - the point is that DDC have started playing hard-ball with Asda over their (Asda's) delays. I dont know whether that is wise as if Asda pull out, the development would collapse unless there is something in the background DDC are keeping close to their chests. There is no suggestion at the moment that Asda are pulling out, just a later than desirable opening date late 2011 from memory.

I wasn't blaming the Town Council for the closure of the loos, DDC are! I think the Town Council are entirely blameless for that fiasco.
Barry
Thanks. That's my own fear, that the whole project would collapse. Given the delays, I'm not sure whether the collapse of the project wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing (although it would probably cost zillions!) as the project could then be replanned. I quite like Scotchie's idea of relocating the proposed Whitfield shop development there. Seems eminently sensible to me.

17:3539340Thank you Sheila, I'm aware of that! My allegory was that the excuses sound like Labour spin, not that they actually were Labour spin.....

19:3939355The question really is Andy would the Whitfield developer want to relocate there..... I doubt it.

21:3839369Surely the answer for the DTIZ site is to build a brand spanking up to date, modern, aesthetically pleasing............. BUS STATION!
Can we manage that? Erm, probably not.
