Am I the only one confused as to the position of UKIP on Europe now?
They are beginning to sound like the Butcher Dance:
You butcher left leg in, your left leg out, in out, in out, shake it all about......
Seriously though, we have to manage the entry of Turkey into the EU carefully; learning from the mistakes made when the last lot entered. But, from my point of view, Turkey is closer to European thinking than the likes of Rumania, Bulgaria etc. But, as has been said already, there are many issues to resolve first, Cyprus being just one. But, not talking about them won't get a resolution.
The Obama influence is, as usual, vastly overstated. He recognises Turkey as a majorly strategic NATO partner and is keen that position isn't compromised by anti-Muslim, and pro-Greek thinking. I'd say that was eminently sensible for an American President.

the greek government will never allow turkey entry, the hatred goes too deep.
try going into a greek restaurant and asking for a turkish coffee, used to do it all time great fun.
luckily coffee is the last course, so they do not have a chance to add something to the taramasolata.
No need to be confused regarding UKIP`s position on Europe Sid.
In case you missed something:-
1. We don`t want Turkey to join the EU.
2. We want to pull out of the EU.
Simple as that...... still confused?
But John, if we are going to leave the EU what differnce does it make who joins? Does UKIP have a problem with Turkish membership of NATO?

i often wonder what the drink of choice is for brian, would like to try a glass of it myself.
Sid, unfortunately, I`m assuming that we won`t be leaving the EU anytime soon because the people of this country won`t be given the referendum that they want. Therefore, if we are still stuck in it, in my opinion, Turkey`s admission will make a bad thing even worse. I appreciate of course that`s not your take ( or others ) on the issue though.
With regard to NATO, that is a totally different issue and although UKIP doesn`t have a problem with their membership of that particular group it doesn`t mean that we should run the risk of opening the floodgates to even more immigrants that we don`t need or want. Don`t forget that Turkey also enjoys the protection of NATO. It`s not a one-way situation.

Turkey's application for EU membership should be considered in light of only there ability to meet the membership criteria, all else is either
a) an internal issue for the EU to manage e.g. Greek antipathy to Turkey; or
b) a criteria for entry e.g. transitional arrangements for freedom of movement, joining the euro, signing up to Shengen etc.
It should be remembered that Turkey is a modern secular state that has battled long and hard with not only Islamic fundamentalists, but also various separatist and radical groups. They are one of the few countries to have banned not only the veil but also the headscarf in public buildings.

that is right turkey is a modern secular state, even gave votes to women back in the 1920's.
99% muslim but all religions are accepted as equal, everyone over the age of 18 gets the vote, they have been members of nato since 1952.
most importantly they are the buffer zone between the lunatic states of the middle east and us imperialists in the west.
mind you after seeing "midnight express" all those years ago i think that i would prefer to give their prisons a miss.
they seem to have a problem with human rights, i must admit i have no problem with them dealing some kurdish factions in a rather basic way, i seem to remember we had a pop at the kurds back in the thirties.
I like lemon curd, does that count?

I casually read your coment Sid on being confused concerning UKIP and Europe. Just in case my posts confused you, let me assure you that the UKIP is Europe friendly! Europe, dear Sid, is, and has ben in history, and always will be, Europe. I DO NOT refer to the system called e.u. that some try to force people into calling 'Europe' when I write Europe. Can you grasp thatthe e.u. is NOT Eurpe, but a system, and when I write Europe I mean a continent with countries, which include Switzerland, Russia and Norway.
