Bankruptcy only lasts for a year, some of these dissolved/bankrupt businesses are 3, 4 to 5 years old, so he wouldn't be listed.
The Chamber mustn't hide behind semantics.

No semantics Roger.
Bankruptcy in itself does not disbar anyone as a director. Conduct is far more important, many, many very successful and respected business people have been through multiple bankruptcies, learning from the experiences before achieving success.

Barry, does the Chamber have any plans to inform the membership officially?

The Board were informed yesterday evening by email.
Things have necessarily progressed swiftly, Peter. No doubt an email to members will go out from the office Monday.
For what it's worth, and to support what Barry has said: a little "experience" often underpins success if we learn from it properly and nowhere is this more true than in the business world, which is why what can appear as "dodgy dealings" in the past can actually be an enhancement rather than a barrier. It is a properly democratic and vigorous environment based on achievement and potential and drive rather than dodgy moral judgements (although they do count, especially in the realm of "spin"!!). Do I sound as if I love it? Correct!!
You sound as though you have gone soft in the head Bern if the rumours about this man are true. All of the big cheeses in the commercial world have probably lost one company, maybe even two, but SIX!!! No-one can be that unlucky, but they can be that stupid or cute.
We can all support someone who has made a genuine effort and been unlucky with the outcome, but demonstrates having learnt from the experience, and I suspect that is what you really mean.
Howevr, I would respectfully suggest a lack of due diligence at the CoC selection process can be the only reason a person with such a record would acheive such an exalted position.

Sid - it is an election not selection process.
You may be right about bankruptcies in a general sense but not necessarily in respect of the specific. I cannot comment further on that.
Thanks for the clarification Barry. Maybe the election process needs to be modified to ensure only appropriate candidates are allowed to stand for election?

I'm aware that businesses are sometimes wound up for tax purposes, but in my experience they are done so in shady circumstances, and often to offset personal taxation and against other businesses. If this is the case with Mr MacSween, then business acuman isn't being called into question, but perhaps business integrity is. Which is the worse, dodgy business practices or advising others on their businesses with a record of six bankrupt companies on his cv? Either way, it seems that he isn't the shining light many of us had hoped for at the launch in the not too distant past; Dover Chamber of Commerce has been tarnished by this and the awful treatment of Roger Walkden.
One must question where they hope to go now, and I hope Barry might be able to comment on that.
True friends stab you in the front.

I think the last paragraph of your posting is quite correct Andy "where they hope to go now". There is little doubt that the integrity of the Chamber has been brought into question and members confidence must be shaken as a result, perhaps the best course for Mr. Macsween is to take action for libel, however that in itself is fraught with difficulties as your whole business life will be laid open to public scrutiny. Coupled with that is the cost of such an action which is beyond the means of many.
Regarding a comment from Barry hope you get a response, I am still waiting a response to the question I put in an earlier posting.
Just to be clear: I don't know the guy in question and wasn't talking about him in particular, just in generalisations. OK??!!

funnily enough the star of the show together with canine was in market square this afternoon.
i considered introducing myself and making small talk but then thought it was probably the wrong time.
how could i start up the usual stuff such as "how's business" or indeed finish with something like "nice to have had the pleasure of your companies".
i think i made the correct decision.
