08:2438109I wasn't trying to make play areas a political point Howard, but John mentioned that the Tories are running down play areas and then closing them, I just wanted to put the record straight as to why play areas are having their play equipment taken away.
The £100,000 has been talked to death on here many times; the main reason it isn't available anymore, is because no one could come up with a good location for a play area (still can't), so the money got spent elsewhere.
I still believe the Clarendon play area satisfies the greatest need, but the only money that will play for equipment will be section 106 money.

Yes talked to death and as i said on here all that time ago a number of sites were suggested for clarendon none taken up
Sad the 100,000 wasnt fought for
and if its only section 106 dosh that amount is so small clarendon won't get a play area as the cost won't cover it
so lets say bye to the clarendon play area
Another loss to priory!!!

08:4738118That's an unusually negative posting from you Keith.
None of those sites (and some others that I'd suggested) were considered suitable.

10:3238127Phil jollyes pet shop took up the cost of feeding the birds in the aviary up at the park just after we opened,on the understanding that they used the money saved there on the upkeep of the aviary. The staff come down a couple of times a month for seed and millet etc and we are hoping that will help with keeping it open as long as possible.

10:4838137That's really good to hear, Humphy! I've always had reservations about Jollyes, specifically because its opening led to the closure of the pet shop in Lorne Road, but now I've heard that, I shall have no hesitation in using Jollyes henceforth.
Thanks for the info.

13:2038628Just to confirm.
I was up the park again this morning and the new equipment has started to be installed.
There is an artists impression on the fence of how it will look afterwards and I have to say it looks super.
Isn't funny how so many of these threads turn into political bashing.
The youngsters will have a whale of a time in there.

19:5738667Connaught Park is a "strategic" play area Keith as you well know.
Elmsvale Recreation ground is also a strategic play area and it's in the Maxton Elmsvale and Priory Ward; it's had some new equipment fitted quite recently.

09:0138732Clarendon is in the Priory part of the Maxton, Elmsvale and Priory Ward.
A play area in the old Clarendon site would satisfy the most people.

What exactly is a 'strategic' play area? It sounds like a key battleground in some war zone!

19:4439807Political sledging isn't the answer to playground problems, John. Play areas for kids shouldn't - SHOULDN'T - be political battle zones. Custard pie throwing should be reserved exclusively for the Council Chamber at Whitfield........
