Well I suppose the MSC Poesia kicked off the season for us here in Dover in fine style and although very few locals were onboard I was glad to be able to bring some coverage so that local people could see what it was like. It was difficult to get onboard. Local Press topdog Graham Tutthill was telling me he knew one Japanese member of the media who had made an 11 hour trip from Tokyo just to cover it...so make no mistake the coverage for Dover and the ship was global.
But that brings me to today, and we have another fantastic ship in. It is an enormous beauty too..huge, sleek, dynamic and called
The Jewel of the Seas
Ive never seen this one before, so onwards and upwards and as we said on the Poesia comments page, hopefully in due course we will be able to manage to direct some passengers from these great vessels into the town.
But take a look at the latest beauty here today if you get a chance.

I was on the cliffs with my dog about 0730hrs today,I am off work for about a week, anyway I did see that beauty, my wife and myself would love to have a trip in one of them maybe one day.
A very good name for her Jewel of the sea.

Another great ship sails into Dover, I can see it from my window, as you say PaulB very sleek, and there's a lot more to come. In just a few days time we will have our Italian friends back in port, with the MSC Lirica and the MSC Opera visiting.

If you long to take your wife on a cruise then simply do not run as an independent candidate at the next general election and save your £10k deposit
.
You and your long suffering wife deserve a nice cruise in sunnier climes.

Just heard that the Cruise Liner MSC Lirica's visit on Tuesday is off and its going somewhere else,I wonder if it is because of the road works at the cruise entrance road.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

John your info on the MSC LIRICA's visit being off wasnt quite accurate as its here as I write laying resplendant at Terminal 2 in the early morning sun. Not quite the whopper dimensions of MSC POESIA but still a beautiful ship...and like they say..
...size isnt everything !

I understand now Paul,it was due to unload and reload, but only 180 disembarked so they have made it a Port of Call only,so it may be the Coach operators didn't have time to get organised that is why the Town is busy with Cruise passengers, perhaps we should try it more often, another MSC ship due in Friday.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!
Might be nice if MSC answered the e-mails they receieve. same goes for carnival cruises.

their were stacks of tourists in town today.
i am guessing that most were american, baseball caps and very large torsos seems to be a trait.
let us hope that they enjoyed their short stay, couldn't move for cameras at one stage.

Yet another fantastic MSC ship in today. As I write its manouvering outside my rear window. Its a grey miserable morning with a biting wind but the ship over rides the miserable conditions and looks completely exotic. Pity the passngers cant see Dover in a better light..but I guess thats the way it goes.
The ship today is MSC OPERA following in just shortly after the equally gorgeous Lirica and the superfab Poesia.
This company is clearly keen on Dover. One hopes Frederick Scales, who appears to be the guy in charge of Tourism, also I noted recently deputy leader to the master of all he surveys PaullyW, is talking to this company and looking at ways of working with them? But I dont know..I think it might be fair to say Fred is low profile.
Always happy to hear from Fred on this or anything else.
I just feel a lot could be done here...

Yes I was on th cliffs, one day we will get on one, I was up there with my dog looking out at them trying to get the Barge platform up the one that cappsized in Dover Harbour Last Friday +it had a digger on it must be costing alot of money to do that and it is now filled up with water and that will not help, when I was young man this was the kind of work I done working from a barge e.t.c but not capsizing them it can be very cold work but I do miss it but we all get old but I think I could still do it today with I was called on.

I was down at the Docks today to welcome the Opera, coach loads of passengers, going to Canterbury, Leeds Castle,Walmer Castle and Sandwich as well as Dover Castle, and the tour busses to the Town Centre £3 or 5 euros or$6.
Many of the crew got off and did thier shopping, but plenty of passengers going into the town, the Kent Tourist lady was swamped, but little time to do anything as only in port until2pm.
One funny thing a lady with 30 bags cases and picture frames called me to help her get a taxi, the Taxi driver shook his head and said you will need 2 taxis, after 30 mins of loading unloading pushing and shoving eventually we got them all in,she did say thank you, which acording to the security and baggage staff was good because most of the passengers didn't even acknowledge the help they were given.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

3 quid to the town centre???
that is obscene john.
you are right about the crew, i stopped to munch a sandwich in market square late morning and saw lots of young people with cameras that did not look like cruise passengers.
eventually one lad came across to ask me to take a photo of him and his mates, turned out they were from peru.
they thought the fountain was great!!

Yes there must have been some visitors in town as I noticed this morning loads of coins in the fountain( dont all rush round!). So some are certainly drifting in from the Liners. The fountain has only just been re done, cleaned out, serviced etc so the coins are all new. Nice to see that...there are a few oul romantic souls left.
There used to be a song there didnt there...
"Three coins in the fountain
somewhere in the heart of Rome"
or words to that effect, but its before my time!
Hate to mention the dilapidation that immediately greets the visitors as they emerge from under the bypass...the Bistro is shut now..as is Unwins, and as for the old market, well... if we could get that bit of town fixed up?

There was a great buzz in town with all the cruise tourists, I was asked twice to take a picture for a nice Italian couple and a group of Filipino crew members which I gladly did.
PaulB I wish you didn't mention the song 'Three coins in a fountain' I've had the tune which my great-grandaddy used to sing going around in my head all day.
Dotto, you b****ard!!! I can't shake it. All I have to say to you is Agadoo. Ha!!!

Agadoo doo doo...
You will all be pleased to know there is another lovely cruise liner in again today..another big one and yet again its another fab MSC one..MSC Armonia. They keep coming and we are all delighted to see them. Wonder if any official from Dover, as I suggested strongly before, has made any solicitations to the company with regards to our local tourist facilities.
The grass is continuing to grow under our feet on that one alas.
But enjoy the wonderful ship...

Afficionados of the seafront life, especially those who frequent on bank holiday mondays, such as we have today, will notice the large and striking NORWEGIAN JEWEL in at terminal 2. I say striking...as its the one with the multicoloured livery all down the side. It looks fantastic. Anyone down near it today with their box brownie might like to snap it and send it on over to yours truly.
