13:219539Interesting letter in the paper today about Cllr Sue Nicholas, and her behaviour at River Brownies anniversary party.
If the letter is accurate, then that sort of behaviour is not acceptable at all.
Did it really matter if the Mayor was there. It is all Dover, River may be run by parish council, have it's own leader etc, but come on, this was not a political point scorer but a group of youngsters trying to have fun and celebrate.

13:599541River is not a part of Dover in the sense of it coming under Dover Town Council. The mayor of Dover has no role there any more than the mayor of Herne Bay. The Chairman of a Parish Council has the same status in their Parish as the Mayor does in Dover.
I did not see the letter but I can imagine what the issue is about.
There are protocols that govern visits by mayors or Parish Council Chairmen to other Parishes or Towns and if they are not followed they can cause upset. It is all a matter of sheer curtosy at the very least.
Storm in a teacup, maybe, maybe not - it depends on whether you think manners are important.

14:129545Having read the letter barry it appears that Protocol HAD been followed with the Chairman of river Parish council having agreed the Mayors presence with chain of office.
If the letter is true(which I have no reason to doubt) then the behaviour exhibited in front of these youngsters was not the right way to get a point across.

We never argue in front of Natascha and I would hate her to witness esteemed councillors acting as 'fishwives'.A quiet word in her shell like would suffice.
Handbags, hairpins and Sunday Hats at dawn in Pencester Gardens is the best way to settle this argument.

15:229553Mandi I suspect I know who wrote the letter and if it is him then he isn't a political friend,in fact just the opposite, and I explained the protocol of how the Mayor of Dover can come to River, they must have permission from the Chairman of the Parish Council or be asked by the Chairman,I understand that this was the case.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

16:289558Oh come on you lot where's your sense of humour. Two old girls, one wearing a glorified lavatory chain round her neck, the other possibly wearing a hat as big as a flying saucer, having a rattle throwing contest, I know when I was a kid we'd have been in hysterics.

18:089560Dave 1. Please try and look at it from the point of view of the children who were witness to this incident.
How many times have we heard on this forum alone about bad kids etc?? What sort of example does it then therfore set to these children , when the adults cannot behave themselves, especially when they hold a senior DDC position such as the one Councillor Nicholas does.
There are times and places for those sort of confrontations and in front of a Brownie pack was not the time nor the place.
The adults SHOULD have known better.

18:369562having read the letter 3 times just to get it clear in my head,my personel thoughts would be that cllr.sue nicolls should stand down and retire from public life and go on a med cruise with her near neighbour as soon as.

19:519566Just to clear the air and I do like Daves Comments .I was not wearing a hat .There was no public row indeed I dont thinkl the children were aware of my presence I merely walked into the room saw the Mayor muttered about protocol and with drew .No slamming of doors or stamping of feet .At my age I find it best to withdraw from a situation .
I did sit watching their firework dislay in the rain the previous evening having come straight from council meetings .
Before you jump on the bandwagon ensure you have the facts .The Chairman of the Parish Council was unable to attend however the vicechairman was not asked to attend .I was not there as a District Councillor .Many years ago I was a brown owl.

19:569568But why just leave Sue, this event was not about you, but bringing everyone together in celebration. Could you not have just tolerated the situation for the sake of those lovely youngsters.
Seems a bit silly to go off just because you didn't like what you saw,and it was not the best example to have been setting really

20:469579You know me Howard, can't reveal my sources, but if it was who asked me he lives in River and he couldn't believe what was happening,he asked me about protocol in these matters, and having walked from Sandwich to Hastings were we had visiting Mayors running all over the place into other Mayors patch,I knew a little of what was required.
Funnily enough Diane is my fellow ward Council and a friend and Mayor,it sometimes is difficult to know what to call her,if she is on official duty with her chain on she is Mr Mayor.
Reminds me of a story that Brian the Town Sergeant told me,if the Mayor fell over board he would try to save the chain,as it is the chain that represents Dover.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

Bern I am suprised at your posting. This is not about having a funny bone. The point being made is that we should practice what we preach when we tell children to behave a certain way, and yet adults who SHOULD have known better decide to make a song and dance at something which wasn't about them at all.
There has been a lot of talk in the past on this site and others about showing youngsters lack of value, decorum, etc.
Who do they learn these values from??? Us adults to a degree, and yet here was a display from a well known public representative not showing good behaviour at all.

22:259584Mandie, Sue has already said that the children were not aware of her presence even if they were didany of them cry, get alarmed, or hide under the nearest table, I somehow doubt it. You really are beginning to sound like the female equivalent of Victor Meldrew.

this is a big issue with me, not referring to that organ i sell outside marks and spencers either.
why do papers publish that sort of rubbish, just an excuse for a disgruntled loser to badmouth someone that has done better than them.
i remember a letter in the eggspress that concluded "if brains were dynamite, paul watkins would not have enough to blow his brains out".
there was no reason given as to why the "writer" thought that way, just personal abuse.
