Have people really looked at these? I mean really looked!!!!
At first I thought these are great and then I looked at the plans on the DHB site and realised what they actually mean.....basically it's like someone saying we are going to take part of Pencester Gardens and turn it into a luxury car park.
At least 35 metres of beach will be taken and a huge amount of the sea amenity which will affect the sailing school and swimmers. In addition all those luxury house and hotel planned for Western Heights will be looking over.........a logistics centre open, I presume, around the clock! Where will the fishermen go? Will people be able to walk along the wall? It's only when you look at the birds eye perspective that you really see the amount of harbour it really takes up.
Personally I think the plans are greedy and certainly won't help Dover residents only those that need somewhere to park their luxury boats.Perhaps we should be asking now for an alternative plan that keeps our harbour as an amenity for all?

Welcome to the forum Fred, i don't know how far advanced the plans are but my main concern is the proposed new marina either side of the Prince of Wales pier which will take away a lot of the viewing area from there. I am also concerned at the loss of beach, once some is taken away it is easy for more to go the same way.

Welcome Fred. I am for one who really dislike the new plans of DHB very much.

There is also a question in my mind. If the money for the revamp of the seafront came from Sea Change/Government money who approved those plans can the DHB just run roughshod and ..........take some of the beach????????

a)The beach is DHB other than the bit from Premier Inn down to the Eastern Docks which is DDC.
b)Don't know.

best one to ask is DDC and Landregistry, I guess they can answer your questions....

Sorry but I think you are over acting,
The more Yachts than that means more trade for shops etc.
The fishing boats will fit in there as they do now.Our sea front is one of the best looking ones there is for walking and viewing.
If the two councils could look after their patch like the D.H.B. do it would be a much better place to shop and live in.
It will also bring more work and again that means the shops and companys will do better and again that will bring even more jobs.

I have absolutely no problem with more boats......it would be wonderful....but they are pinching from the existing marina for their commercial plans. Would it not be more beneficial for the people of Dover to keep this valuable resource of the harbour as it is and ask for some alternative design that keeps the seafront intact? Surely it is only commercial greed to take this away from the people?.

Does it really matter what we think, DHB will do exactly what they want when they want the same as they always have done.

I don't think there is any suggestion that there will be more pleasure craft visiting, just that they will moor somewhere else.
DHB have made statements in the past that income from them is paltry.

I think you'll find that bit was lost when the new exit road from the Eastern Docks was built - from what I have heard DDC were happy to get rid of the responsibility for it, which is a shame as it was the only bit of beach with any character when they rented out boat plots. The change in currents with dock developments has washed most of it away anyway.
Perhaps Paul W can confirm.

I think this project will go the same way as their T2 plan went.

Ray , you are correct. The beach area was handed over to the Dept for Transport to allow the exit for the docks to be modified & improved.
The works & development on the Western side of the Port has full planning permission & is not new other than the expansion of cargo facilities switching from the Eastern area allowing further cargo expansion & creating extra capacity in the Eastern dock area.

I think moving the marina into the Outer Harbour could well increase visits as it will be more accesible than the current marina. It also frees up the non-operational land around the existing marina for mixed-use development. I attended many of the early consultations and DHB were very proactive in encouraging people to come forward with ideas to maximise the potential of the beach, for example, with a lido pool. Engage in the process and see what happens, but let's not forget that the development of the port is vital to the local economy.

Kevin, what are you basing your facts on that the development of the port is vital to the local economy? The few local people that are employed by the port are on low pay or zero hour contracts. Visitors at the cruise terminal are put into coaches and whisked up to Canterbury.

We do get an increasing number of cruise passengers in town year on year, I have no idea how much they spend per head.
I may be missing something here but I don't see the point of moving the marina, moving cargo from East to West to free up space in the Eastern docks is perfectly logical but I cannot see why we have to lose beach space and a lot of the great views from the pier.
