i am staggered that a simple thing like breakfast could contravene electoral law.
marek makes a valid point about giving lifts to the polling stations, surely that is a form of bribery?

Lifts are allowed to supporters but buying drinks or breakfast is classed as 'treating'.
On the lifts issue, some people take delight in obtaining a lift from a Party and then voting for the other side!
The way in which the "treating" issue is avoided, is for the candidate and agent never to buy anything during the electio9n campaign.

Correct Stephen, that has always been the situation for any sensible candidate/agent. Here though we have a candidate saying openly come along for a free breakfast and that puts him on very dangerous ground.
Unfortunately I agree, would have been best not to mention it publicly

Barry, I gather they have at least 5 in the same category as Lord Ashcroft.

I still stand by what I said and doing I have already said anyone from any party can come but will have to pay for their own meal and that is because I do not have my own funds to pay for them all,so as I said before do what you wish, anyway the forum have not said they will come but I hope they do.
The tories are getting a bit upset about this Vic , perhaps they are worried that Ukip will take votes off them .

Vic,
I think you need to make a definitive statement that this is a breakfast for friends and family and is absolutely not connected with the election. If you want to do this, best off removing all UKIP literature and paraphernalia at the time. There is no point getting yourself into legal hot water over a fry-up.

Sound advice Phil.We don't want you losing by default Vic.
Its OK for the Tories and the Labour lads to sell off seats in the House of Lords but buying a brekkie for your helpers... you're taking the *iss.
Marek
I think therefore I am (not a Tory supporter)

Indeed. If you do have a fry up, try and guarantee that the sausages are good British bangers. The last thing you want is a Eurosausage on your plate.

I find it amazing that we try to be helpful and we get accused of bullying and all sorts.

I also fimd it amazing Barry .I spoke to Vics loyal workers this morning as they were opposite my house .I tried to explain the situation. One guy quite understood and agreed with my comments but sadly the othe chap it was like talking to the wall .Vics wife got it quite wrong and reckoned I was going to report him to the Standards Board .I think both Barry and I were giving out friendly advice .
Completely blinkered .So much for helping it.I will let him get into his own mess next time .Not sure where the Hot Cross buns come into this .Luckily Vic did not give them out this year so we cant accuse him of bribery on that count .

Barry, may-be you want to ruin the appetite at a breakfast, but there is no way any commission investigating would consider it electoral bribery. There is no way the UKIP could influence people's secret vote in the ballot box by suggesting members of a local forum attend a breakfast and pay for it! It comes under a form of fellowship. If the Forum administration are offered a free breakfast, this won't come under bribary either. The vote is secret, no-one can determine what a person votes, and there is no attempt on the part of Vic to ask people to vote him in return for a breakfast! Furthermore, Barry, I am hungry right now, haven't had breakfast, and it's 3.o clock. I've eaten nothing! It's like this every day. It's a bad habit!

Alexander - we have warned you and tried to do so in a friendly way, what is suggested is clearly a case of treating. Frankly I dont care if you do it or not, you will be fourth or fifth place in the poll so no-one may take any notice, but you are running a risk but it is your choice.
If you end up influencing the poll result then maybe someone could use this, using Vic own words, to take action against you.
The truth is that you might get away with it but it does betray that you are not taking seriously this election and the result, to put it all at risk in such an open and very silly way. No serious candidate would behave this way.
