20:3035344So tell me, how does American rubbish, Rage Against the Machine song called "KILLING IN THE NAME" save the British music culture. I might give you some credit if it was a good British artist with a good song, standing in its own right without a hate campaign.
Cowell and X Factor do not get the No 1 spot each year on their own Rick, they get there because people purchase the record. Over the years of X Factor like it or like it not some of these artists are now world known artists in their own right so how is that killing the British music culture. Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke are two of those artists, like them or not that are hitting top spot and who are British.
I have no axe to grind as I have purchased none of the records over the years and I would not care if the reality shows stopped tomorrow. However I do think that there should not be a HATE campaign that stops any record getting to No 1, that in its self will do harm to the music industry. No 1 spot should be on the merit of the music and the general public's genuine desire to hear that music.
I just wonder if the same attitudes would be on here, if a member of this forum got on X Factor, did well, got through all the stages to the final and then won it. I just think there may be a few different threads then. Dover Forum singer wins X Factor, I can just imagine the write ups.

20:4535346Well the haters won, with their foul mouthed filthy devils song. I suppose it just about sums up our broken down sad society in this Country. Mind you as I see it they all purchased it to stop Cowell and kill a young mans dream so they can all now put their dirty little record in the draw or bin, until next year or did they all think Somon Cowell will just fade away.
Still they have saved the British music culture. NOT

20:5135347Perhaps they haven't saved the British music culture in one blow, but if Rage being at #1 this Christmas has dealt the first blow in a rebirth of some credibility in the music industry, fair play to them. I have to say that I think the record is crap, but then so was Joe McTwaddle's, albeit for entirely different reasons.
Is it a rebirth, though? Somehow I doubt it - the MOR crowd will be back with a vengeance in 2010, you can bet your bottom dollar. Cowell and his motley band of culture assassins have too much invested in their machine to pull the plug just yet. What I want to know is where decent rock music has gone to........

21:2235351This is an ACE result. The whole point is not that Rage is a great song, it is all about the fact that the X-Factor is a CRAP song. Rage was probably just any random choice of song, it was all about stopping the X-Factor from winning yet again rather than voting on the merits of Rage. I can't stand Britney Spears but I would have gladly purchased her single if it helped stop the X-Factor. People only respond to the X-Factor songs so strongly because they have it stuffed in their faces so much. It may be good for TV but it is bad for music and VERY bad for artists outside of the Cowell empire.
Let's hope that this is the first year of the Xmas no.1 being returned to MUSICIANS and MUSIC LOVERS instead of one multi-millionaire and his philistine gameshow bol***ks.

21:3135352The cynic in me says that Sony BMG win either way, as both Simon Cowell publishes his music through them, as do Rage Against the Machine. However it is quite pertinent that the song is about rebeling against the status quo (I don't mean the band Vic). And if people didn't where would we be then? We do need a shake-up and the public needs to be reminded the difference between music and lowest common denominator entertainment.
Rebirth, maybe not, however at least a moment of rethinking. As for the song, it's a great tune, I used to love Rage Against the Machine, and compared to the stuff churned out by Cowell and the X-factor, it's quite clever. I doubt many of the X-Factor contestants know what a time signature is let alone write around them.
"Devil's Music"? Most of the popular music (including that on the X-Factor) would owe it's roots to the Delta Blues. Robert Johnson (Eric Clapton's biggest influence) was a man obssessed with song's about his reputed 'soul-selling'. A womaniser, heavy drinker and poisoned by the age of 27 (that seems to be the age to die for great musicians), I think if the F-word had been in his vocabulary he would have most definitely used it.

08:2035378I would not care if it was banished or not, but millions must like the show, so they do not count then Brian. I am sure there are things you do like that millions do not so best they be banished as well.
Sorry but it gets to me when people be little what others enjoy, we live thankfully in a free society where we have choice. If you do not like it turn it off, if you think there is too much of it complain to the powers to be.
I just wonder how many of you that hate X-Factor and Britons got Talent have CD's at home of Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke, Susan Boyle and others who have won these shows. All of them now with their music world wide, all who have achieved their dream.
I know one thing I would rather have their music any day than that of the crap that is now No 1 and by golly that is crap and should be bannished but hey who am I to impose my views on others.

09:3935384Yes we do have choice in this free society Harry, and people chose to buy Rage against the Machine.

09:5835385Rick - for you (and for me and some others) the X Factor disc was a crap song, but for others it wasn't. There is such a wealth of diverse music out there it seems bitter and nasty to raise a storm just to stop one young man from reaching one of his goals. Getting a number one record these days isn't what it used to be - there was always the commercial stuff but there was a balance of enterprise with talent, music and sense - now it is all about shifting "product". But even so, that is not our world if we like real music, so let it be. I am not glad about this result, not that I give much of a flying frock anyway - but if I did, I would be sad that enough people cared enough about preventing something positive happening for someone to take part in a managed and constructed campaign based on hate and loathing. Get a Life and grow Up, are words that come to mind.

12:2035395Who gives one what other people have on their shelves - there is enough music for everyone to listen to what they like without being nasty and spiteful about other people tastes. I really don't like much of the mainstream stuff, but I like Leona Lewis voice as an entity; I loathe Gilbert and Sullivan to the point of being unable to have a meaningful relationship with someone who likes it, but I wouldn't want to spoil someone elses listening pleasure.

13:0035397Can`t comment on main post as I don`t watch it, though seen some via the family watching. However, as Bern mentions above, there`s enough music for all tastes about, and regarding Gilbert and Sullivan, (who I`ve never taken to and I do have some opera cd`s)I heard a quote some years ago that they were for people who couldn`t afford to go to the opera.

14:1035403No!!! Two different things, Colin. I enjoy a lot of opera but so dislike G&S!!! But that is only my taste and I am sure they have much to offer those who enjoy it. I just can't see it at any price!!
