In this case democracy was definitely served as the vast majority of the Dover populace did not object to the well publicised proposal in comparison to the few (in relative terms) that did register their objection.

There never was any chance given to the Public for a referendum, as the localism law would foresee. This has nothing to do with Democracy, but rather, that the Public have been denied a vote on an issue that is known to be hotly disagreed with by many people here!
This has been rammed through, this is just a Dictatorship!
End of!
The vast majority of people in Dover were not even aware of a the possibility to make comments on the many CGI proposals presented one after another to DDC Planning, and know that the authorities will just do what they want anyway.

The turnout at the 2011 district elections for Dover District was 44% because the majority of people here do not trust the politicians, and even less as time goes by.
What to expect from a minority authority that does not have the trust of the majority of people and blatantly goes ahead with plans that are contrary to the expressed wishes of many.
Authorities who are afraid of Democracy and stamp out the so-called "localism" that never was!
Too afraid to give a referendum!
Just turn away from the ballot box and boycott public consultations from now on!
Forget Community debate!

you know very well that people were aware of the right to comment on the planning application, you yourself posted on here about the abundance of planning notices pinned up anywhere remotely near the western heights.

I posted the exact opposite, Howard, that there were very few planning notices around Western Heights, and none anywhere else in Dover.
I informed the appropriate office in the Council at the time.
This is an agenda driven through by the Council following a Government agenda to mass-build everywhere.
The vast majority of people in Dover had no way of knowing about the CGI planning application.
This has nothing to do with Democracy!
These proposed houses are not meant for us.

There is nothing better than people talking to each other to spread gossip, news and information, anyone who did not know about the proposed plans must have been rather isolated from society.

Theres a real danger here of my agreeing with mr Watkins!!!!!
Now Alexander, whilst I may not fully support the proposals for the Western Heights, like yourself I made my representations and views known.
Now then we could challenge your figures
if you got a 100nsignatures(or whatever the figure) in your petition(even this may not signal disapproval, it realy depends on how you put the question)
but for the moment lets say the petition were all totally anti.
The population of Dover District is ??????
so you could say all those thousands of people as they didn't object are in favour
careful how you use figures alexander it will come back to bite you

There seems to be a lot going on in and around Dover but does not look like it is bring jobs for our out of work young ones I have members of my own family been looking for work for some time now but there is still none going so I told. There must be away of getting more work for them and there jobs around that need doing we all see it and unskilled but it would be work. need is there for full time clearing up our roads sides around the district .
I know it needs to funded and all the safe rules that go with work like that but it would help both them and us.

Where are we at with the Western Heights development? Was it approved? Is anything liable to happen?
I only ask because on p79 of the Dover Express there's a notice about the disposal of land by DDC up there.

Haven't seen the paper yet but planning permission was definitely given and appeals to the Secretary of state for a public inquiry were refused soon after.
No doubt the development will start when the economic climate dictates so maybe we can expect building to start sooner rather than later?
