11:536625The preparations are afoot on the seafront for the firework spectacular..there cant be anyone in the town that doesnt know about this one surely. There is definitely something different with the preparations for this extravaganza...so could be one to see...could be different.
oh wow!! where did that one go! whoooosh!

i have spoken to so many people today, that did not know of the event.
it seemed well publicised to me.
the only thing that i can think of to boost it more would have been some large blackboards in the town centre
with an arrow pinting to the seafrone with big chalk letters saying "fireworks 8.15 tonight".

22:116667Top Class, who ever said Dover can not put on a show.
Had a great meal out with the wife then went down to watch the fireworks, a great evening all round.
Congratulations to all the organisers.

08:596671Well done Scotchie with the picture...nice one!
Thousands of people gathered to see this unparalelled firework display on Dover seafront. The area was totally alive and throbbing...for a change. A much underused resource is the seafront, as normally its deathly quiet come evening.
But the display was fantastic..from three roving boats in the water, from the castle, from the Prince of Wales pier...all co-ordinated to the sound of music. A real professional job, and the quality of the fireworks themselves were first rate.
This time the message got out and all surely enjoyed the spectacle.
By the way those seafront lights are not up to it. They are too dark, there simply isnt enough illumination from those ancient looking lanterns. I tripped over twice...you simply cant see. But Ive been saying that for years. Time we had those oft muted seafront white lights added. This prob of course nothing to do with the display people who did a fantastic job.
But a terrific evening was had by all.
The batteries in my camera went dead just at the wrong moment. Bummer!

22:596703Definately not on the scale of last night, that was many thousand ££ I expect.
However, though the summer Broadstairs usually has a beach firework display for several weekends in a row - Thanet Council isn't much better off, if at all, than DDC.
Been nice knowing you :)

23:196704brian has a point though, the sea front is underused.
we could have more day time events, like flea markets at weekends.
weekend nights could have fireworks now and then, clearly nothing like the scale of last night.paul said earlier about the poor lighting, if this was improved, a local band playing, a few food stalls and a beer tent, would be enough to lure locals and some from further afield.
we are extremely lucky to have an attractive seafront with action e.g. ferries and cruise ships in the harbour itself.

00:126708All good ideas, lets ask DHB and see how that goes.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

08:176713A few years back Chris I wrote to DHB, the name of the chap escapes me for the moment..oh yes Bill Fawcus it was..about the possibility of having pleasant white seafront lights strung along from Millers as it was then to the top of the promenade.Just imagine, it could be a nice thing, not only for visitors but for locals too. The seafront is desperately underused..there is nothing to attract people to it other than the obvious sunny day scenario. In the evening its dead as the preverbial dornail. I mentioned to idea too to DDC (Nigel) and indeed the story was featured by Mary Graham in The Mercury. Roger also joined in to see if he could get something going.
Although I had a pleasant letter back from Bill Fawcus, with some optimism as I remember, nothing ever happened. He also took onboard what I said about the poor seafront lighting too, but alas nothing happened there either.
It was pointed out to me by a number of official bods the difficulty of spanning lights between the already inplace lamposts. However during the Regatta they have no trouble spanning sounds systems between these posts.
The original letters are all lost now due to collapsing website difficulties over the years and collapsing computers.

08:406717Can you honestly see the harbour board spending money on street lights on the promenade, they take ages to fix the glass in the shelters.

12:336721The fireworks were brilliant. It meant I didn't get home from work until nearly 10.30pm but it didn't matter because I would have kicked myself if I had missed them.
I think the Broadstairs fireworks are paid for by the town council rather than the district council (which is busy selling off museums and historic properties because it has a massive black hole in the budget). Having seen the workings of Thanet and Dover councils I would say Dover has a much better grip on things even if there are problems in some areas

19:466729i think that the post from chris earlier in the thread abut DHB, was said with a rather large tongue in cheek.
i can well imagine the moguls there being enthusiastic about anything us locals suggest!!

20:536735i don't see it changing either brian, they just issue terse statements about how they do things that they did not have to do.
now and again they have cutbacks that don't affect anyone in the middle bracket or at the top.
our own fuhrer, paul watkins was in favour of privatising it at the last general election.
local opinion said that it hurt his cause.
i suppose that privatising it would bring a balance , while the banks queue up to be nationalised.
