So, how do we make it happen Roger? Surely the fake shops will look more attractive than murals which, to me at least, just appear to paint over the cracks whilst shouting "depressed area!!"

Burlington house could become an ASDA store.

There is money around, but not sure of the grant funding bodies. I'll check on the Tyneside link and see what I can pick up from there.
I'll talk to the Mayor and see when the next "empty shops meeting is" . The artists seem to know the funding sources, so maybe they can help. We also need the co-operation of the agents and landlords.

Why not murals or local art or photos Sid? Making locals feel part of the community and taking an interest in their surroundings is an important step towards civic pride and ownership.

Sid I lived in Islington for 12 years, and before that in Manor Park and East Ham; I also worked in Shoreditch from 1980 to 1992 then at Canary Wharf (used to get the bus to work via Hackney, or cycle along the canal) and now work in the City - so I know inner London very well thanks Sid. Not really sure therefore what your point is.

Probably that hoardings that are painted over, look like hoardings that have been painted over and less "arty"; they're also more likely to be abused by paint sprayers.
I travelled to London every day for over 6 months when Jean was in hospital a few years ago and going up the A2 through South London to Guys hospital, you can easily see the inner city decay and graffitti that destroys areas; hoardings are a definite target.
These false fronts can have any image on them I guess, so why not promote our historic sites and attractions, or even other (local) businesses - for a fee.
Roger
I can see your points, chaps, but I also lived in london for years, and I loved the colourful murals and paintings that decorated the streets where I lived and played. Better than advertising, more fun, and more opportunities to involve and therefore give a stake to local artists and residents. Dare I mention the murals in the 6 counties in Ireland? They have stayed put!!!!!
Only becasue folks don't want to be shot whilst trying to remove them Bern. THanks Roiger, I thought for a moment I was the only one seeing trashy chavvie murals all over the place. I don't disagree they probably lool better than advertising hoardings, but sadly, not for very long.
Ross, I was brought up in Meanley Road before moving out at the ripe old age of 3. Got bitten by a dog and still carry the facial scar of that incident all these years later. We also had the first tv in the street and remember, vaguely now, sitting enthralled by a chase scene in the Tex Ritter tv series.
Could never afford Islington though, far too upper class. And besides, I wouldn't want the Bliars as neighbours.

Sid, you couldn`t afford Islington? I used to own it, and Euston Road and Pentonville Road.

I'm surprised you weren't referred to the Monopoly commission Colin!

Don't forget the Old Kent Road, Colin. Usually the one I am saddled with at the end.
