01:4728751Should be a great night. "Last Night of the Proms" on the Big Screen with a big crowd singing along and hopefully waving masses of union jacks. The Big Screen is certainly living up to expectations and it is still three years before the Olympics for which it is intended.
The alcohol ban is the thin edge of the wedge. It was pretty obvious that alcohol would be next after the success with banning smoking. A great number of pubs have closed down as a direct result of the smoking ban, and more since with the recession etc, so banning one addictive pleasure is inexorably leading to the banning of the other. Article below refers:
"And so it begins. The British Medical Association (BMA) is calling for Britain to become the first country to ban alcohol advertising, sponsorship and promotions. We know it won't end there. This line of attack was the first front in the war against smoking, and it appears alcohol is now in the health lobby's sights."

Regarding the esoteric posts concerning peeing on one's hands. Reminds me of the song "My brother Sylveste" with a little bloke going on about his big brother Sylvester who could perform superhuman feats of strength and endurance.
..........Read no further if you are easily offended, I don't want to land up in a Rogergate........
Little bloke is having a pee in the Gents in a pub and says "I wish I had a willy like my brother Sylveste. He needs ten fingers to hold his!" His mate looks across and says "But you're holding yours with ten fingers" and the little bloke says sadly "Yes, but I'm peeing on nine of them!"

10:2028769sue,above 3 persons is a sucsess.

11:4828778If there were more than 3 people, Sue, I suspect you would claim it was a riot, and the fault of the Telly.
Success is transient and its measure should be as variable as the circumstances: the world cup, the tennis, the proms, these are events, and part of the purpose of the telly. Other days there will be a lot of weather to report, and a few people watching sod all on the telly. Success? Like most things, it is variable.

12:5928787I think sue is partly right, not many watch the screen, but some do when events are on.

16:0528886Well there ya go as the old saying goes, only time will tell.
I was going to go but decided to sit down the garden with good company and a few cheap beers and at the end of it walk 20 mtrs to my own bed.
I had a good evening, sod the big telly.

10:4028922Ah! Pity none of you turned up in the end
These big screen events obviously need a good attendance to be in any way successful, still I'm glad we made the effort, we had a lot of fun

16:2028926I came to a similar conclusion as Ian. I had a feeling that a chilly September evening would not be a huge success for this.
I really think that DDC make a mistake in 'over organising' it. If they just had a spot of publicity that it was going to be shown and leave it at that. No chairs, no barriers, nothing. Let people do whatever they want, including having a drink.....

16:3528927Spot on Barry, why couldn't those that did go have to ordain themselves with glorified lavatory chains round their necks, couldn't they have just been themselves for one night.
The publicity was teriible, even my Wife who seems to get the news before the BBC, hope she don't read this, didn't know it was being shown.

20:2228937Sorry but I just think that the Dover public did not want to go down to see the T.V. when you can see the same thing in your own homes maybe by a fireif you were cold, why would you want to go out down the town and sit outside in the cold and after find yourway back home, I am sorry to say it will not be a hit even in the year of 2012 that is the year it was put there for and the events of that year, I do hope I am wrong and that it takes off but that will not be the case at this time of the year, i said it before close it down till the summer time and try again if still it does not take off move it to one of the parks,do not have it on 24/7 but when you do make it into a events with other one mix them up and it just might make it, but big a big if.You must face things head on, I have in the pass it has not always worked out if I had a change again I would have a go again knowing more about it now.And it is the same with the big T.V. this way did not work out so look at it again in a new light, I have ways I think it would work but the D.D.C. will make me the last person to see.

23:1328940What puzzles me is that we are constantly being advised to try and keep our kids away from the TV for too long (watching too many DVDs, playing too many games, etc) and yet in several towns the major new draw is.... a giant TV. Seems a bit at odds with the trend. Also, I know I'd rather sit in the warmth of my living room with a cool beer watching my HD set any day than skulking down the Market Square, dodging drunks and pigeons, to watch some crappy BBC-prepared newsfest. And to be honest, I like to go out into town to get away from TV and the trappings of home.
Let's face it, these big public TV sets are a lot more technically impressive than they are socially impressive. Now, what would be good is if they showed some late night X-rated entertainment, that'll pack the market square INSTANTLY and will be a bonus for all nearby pubs

06:0628941Vic - why go to the footie at Crabble when you can watch big names on the TV at home? Why go to see Richard Digance in Dover when you can watch bruce Forsyth at home? Why go and see U2 live when you can play one of their CDs at home?
We do different things for different effects.

07:3428948Bern but that is all live and you are there you can not beat going to a live gig or show that is better then any T.V. at home or outside and it makes agood day out or night, but again I am only talking about myself I just would not like to sit out outside down the town looking up at a big T,V, Sorry but I do not see that as the same as seeing U2 live which by the way I would love to do,but again that is just me if you like to go down the town and sit there looking at the T.v. GOOD but not for me.
I remain yours faithfully Vic Matcham

18:0228957Vic I think you are probably accurate in that people dont want to go out and watch what they can see at home..it was exactly the same thing. But, wasnt there a bit of an early wave of enthusiasm for all this, for this screen, save for the lone voice of Sue Nicholas ..whats happened to that early wave of enthusiasm. Lets be realistic it was always going to show what you can see at home.... but, even the councillors who voted for it didnt show up on saturday night.
However your suggestion that it should move to a park is not a goer. Can you imagine...sitting in the dark in Connaught Park watching it..even the chains wouldnt turn up to that one!!
Cold, damp, soggy underfoot, without even the blinding lights of KFC to cheer a chap up!

18:2728958Paul please read my post again have I not put summer only,I have said before I did not think that there is a call for the big T.V. in Dover I said that at the same time as Sue,but I also said that it was just me thinking that way as in one person.
I did not know about what others were thinking at that time only Sue but it is here now so we must make the best of it,Again please read my posts on it,and I think it would be the way forward,i have already said I have some ideals how to take it forward I would love to see it take off and you all turn round on me and say"Wrong again Vic"but time will tell, but at this time it needs to close down till the summer, but it could go on again just for Xmas and it would work with the Town council Xmas event this year if that is going ahead.
