21:1465250 A colourful display of panpiper`s outside one of our country`s surviving top name shop`s early this afternoon, and very good they were too. But where was everybody? Has the whole of Dover gone on holiday?
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

21:3965265It`s nice to see that this store is still with us Melissa, and it would be nice to see them expand if they could. The store still gives that certain bit of class to the British High street. I`ll use it whenever I can, food or clothes.

07:2865299But if people don't support the shops we do have Sid, why would new ones open here ?
I send round occasional "blind" emails about "Public Information, Up and Coming Events and Local Business News, including ones I receive from M & S.
I include M & S because I want to encourage as many people as possible to shop there - and other local shops, so they don't move out and the High Street dies.
"Blind" emails mean that no one can see your email address, so you can't receive any spam or scam emails from them; if anyone would like to receive them, just email me to let me know.

11:2265347Oh dear! Am I the only person who thinks that M&S are vastly over-rated.
I hardly ever buy food there as I make 99% of meals myself. Bulk cook and freeze is still my motto

15:2565375Join the club Jan, I try to cook from scratch myself if I've got the time, but without M & S the town will die. I use them for the Christmas food shop & generally for clothing. You can't beat them for customer care, second to none.

15:5365388M&S over here have great outlets in all the 12 parishes. The food is reasonably priced and they even put close to sell by dates up for reduced prices at the end of the evening.A practice that has ceased in mainland UK. They are usually on the garage forcourt with a cash dispensing machine and they don't close til 7pm.

09:4765442True Alexander and when I was in Sri Lanka one of the locals pointed to some containers and told me that they contained womens underwear for M&S. He said that they had made been made in the local sweat shops.

10:1465443Perhaps we could persuade M&S to stop using these country's for manufacturing and add a few more to the list who need our Overseas Aid. That's a good ethical idea.
I wish naive do-gooders would realise that we cannot judge the standards in other places by those we set for ourselves. The world is full of differences and that's what makes it so wonderful. Left to those who beat their breast at anything below our norm, or heaven forgive, just plain different, this planet of ours will rapidly become globalised and stagnant.
Sweat shops are okay, particularly in hot and humid climates, it's natural okay?

10:3765446Sid, I don't think I challenged the morality of large organisations entering in to contracts for the supply of goods manufactured in third world countries.
Whilst these people are clearly exploited, working in terrible conditions for a pittance, without big multi nationals they would starve. Please do not label me a naive do-gooder i've been round this world myself and can see the arguments from both sides but thanks anyway for informing me that some countries are hot and humid, you learn something everyday.

10:5365453many big western companies do set minimum standards for their manufacturers to stick to.
not always enforced of cours but it does show that ordinary people do care about the plight of the poor workforce in the third world.

15:1665478Dave1, no worry, I think I was meant! Still, Sid, may-be it contributes to explaining why 2.5 million British people are unemployed, that is, the official figure, the real one probably much higher! People who are unemployed in their own Country tend to think of their own immediate financial needs, and couldn't give a hoot for the financial problems of sweet shops in Sri Lanka! At least, that is my maxim and attitude, and I really see to it that I get the odd tenner here and there as self-employed, but it really is difficult to find anyone prepared to have work done, as many people are broke, bust, just about getting to their last penny before the next salary comes in, and the next monthly expense.
I for one don't give a hoot for the financial problems of Sri Lanka or Europe, can't afford to, sir (or Sire?).
