Just read in the Dover Express that the Chamber of Commerce have appointed a new DBS Manager - Simon Cork, who used to be on local radio.
Hope this doesn't come as a surprise to you Barry, like my sacking did.
I'm not going to make any negative comments about him as it would be very unfair and just look like sour grapes, but I can't believe that he signed a Contract of Employment for £9,500 - come to think of it, I didn't get the chance, I was sacked before I had the chance to say "no I'll carry on unpaid, deferring salary until such time as the money is available".
I hope Simon doesn't have to fight for what he knows is right for Dover, because the two who sacked me certainly have no idea what the business needs, concerns and aspirations are and just signing businesses up to the Chamber of Commerce, is not the answer.
Being pro-active and on the businesses' side is what matters.
A tourism strategy for Dover and a plan of action (both of which I was half way through) is what is needed.
Not forgetting of course, the run-down and dilapidated buildings too.

Roger, as before I will not comment on your issues for the reasons explained and remain uninvolved directly in that due to a conflict of interest.
In respect of the new appointment, yes the communication issues have been resolved and I was fully aware of the appointment.
I welcome this appointment of Spencer Cork, (not Simon) someone who seems well suited to this post, and wish him luck in his role.
Good luck to Simon Cork. I should imagine he has a huge task ahead of him. Our town is crumbling. There are still areas, that even after all these years, look like bomb sites. Can anything, realistically, be done

Its definitely Spencer Cork & not Simon. I went to school with him, he's a nice fella & I wish him well in the new post.
Does anyone know if he's continuing with his dj'ing? I can't see how he'd be able to fit it all in judging by his recent 'tweets' on the Twitter website. Seems a very busy lad.
http://twitter.com/spencercorkI know a million ways to always pick the wrong thing to say
Didn't see any advertising for this position, was it in the local papers? I thought the Cork's were Folkestone based too?

I didn't see any adverts for the post Sid, so have no idea.
I won't pass any comments on him, other than to say he's not a Dover man, but a Deal one. I hope he's getting paid and more than the £9,500 offered to me.
I do apologise for giving him the wrong name - sorry Spencer.
Roger

I must admit that I was a bit surprised when cards were passed round at David's meeting introducing Spencer as the new DBS Manager. It all seemed a bit too rushed but I suppose it could have been in the offing before Roger left.
I'm amazed that I hadn't run into Spencer before, we nearly met when he applied to join GHBS many years ago but that came to nothing. Anyway, we spoke at the meeting and I wish him well in what will be a difficult job.

He certainly has a tough job but he has the right credentials.

strange about the advertising, maybe he was head hunted?
What are his credentials please Barry? Do you have some background on the feller?
Howard, unlikely to use a head-hunter for a small salary, they wouldn't want to be bothered. Maybe he is a friend of a friend or well known to one of the dynamic duo.

i very much doubt that he would work for £9500 p.a. do you?
looks like the money has miraculously resurfaced.
You may think that Howard, but I couldn't possibly say so....

Good luck to Spencer Cork. I just hope he`s got plenty of bottle.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

Actually, it might be interesting if someone could give us the timeline of Spencer's involvement.

No one is going to do that Terry - no info on whether a married man with two children can afford to take a job with a salary of £9,500, so why after sacking me, did Cameron MacSween pass me a Contract of Employment with a salary of £9,500 ?
There's a lot more to this than we'll ever know, but I did feel, during my discussion with Cameron and Alan, at Cameron's house (can they sack you at someone's private residence ?) where I was dismissed, that they really didn't want me anymore, because I know what needed doing and told them, but they didn't (know what needed doing) but also didn't want anyone arguing with them, so goodbye Roger.
I know I was sacked (I was there !), but I don't know the real reason.
I don't hold anything against Spencer at all, but the Chamber have lost a lot of ground in Dover Town because of this and a lot or porky-pies will have to be told, to regain that ground.
Time will tell and so will I soon.

I'm not qualified to pass comment on Spencer Cork; I don't know him but I wish him well in a job that looks like a poisoned chalice to me.
I can't see him working for the salary offered either. Just as an aside, isn't it illegal to sack someone and then reappoint another person in their place? Normal practice is to at least have the good grace to change the job title, but then good grace appears to be in extraordinarily short supply at Dover Chamber of Secrets (with due acknowledgement to JK Rowling).
True friends stab you in the front.

Andy I think that only applies to Redundancy where the same job title can not be given to someone else for 3 months (if my memory serves me correctly).
As for Spencer Cork, never heard of him before I opened the papers yesterday, so cannot comment. Odd that the Chamber never advertised if they were still looking for someone but that would have meant advertising the Salary!!!
I dont envy him the job though, Roger is a tough act to follow with alot of local support.

I think Roger, Cameron and his team have sufficient experience to know that Spencer will be an asset to the CofC after all Cameron does have a wealth of business knowledge. I had minor dealings with his company Digital Dream a few years back when it dealt in digital cameras. They don't appear to trade in Dover anymore so I assume they re-located elsewhere, or changed their name.
I'd be interested to know if anybody else remembers Digital Dream as I got to know many of their staff who used to drink in one of my pubs. They operated at Maybrook House in Queens Gardens.
