My husband was a great homemade wine maker, Frank kept him supplied with near to end fruit in exchange for the occasional bottle.
In that same area before the bridge, there was a sweet shop, a wet fish shop (next to the Bull) that later became a branch of Coral the bookmakers.

He kept quite a bit of near the end fruit n veg,if wasnt too limp he would sell it.Always remember some of the tins in the shop, labels were so faded you could barely read them.He was a nice old boy but just like Arkwright from Open all hours, and he certainly was open all hours.

Put it this way anything had to be eaten on the same day unless Mrs Frank or their daughter served you.

A few years before he shut shop he called me round there to show me an old Lambretta scooter which was upstairs which he had brought for his daughter brand new from Dover motorcycles in the 60s.He said she had only ridden it once or twice n didnt get on with it.He was asking about £200 for it.I wasnt really interested in them so my mate brought it.I always wished i had as they are worth fortunes now.

This subject seems to have slowed down,

. What about the 'forge' at the bottom of Bunkers Hill opposite the Bull.

Don't remember that one, The Forge or a forge?
I do remember the computer shop down from the Bull either where the chippy is or where they have converted them back to housing.
My brothers first Saturday job, he saved his wages for a ZX81 computer and the owner taught him latin when it was quiet.

Pet shop where Charlton centre now stands i think was Pets arcade, they had quite a range of tropical fish.I can remember going there with my dad where he used to buy Angel fish,Neons, etc. It later moved down the road nr Baileys opticians where it was later taken over by the owners son.Unfortunatly it shut a couple of years ago.

What about the maze that was Turnpenny’s. You could easily get lost in there. I think there used to be a pub on the end before the junction at the bottom of Tower Hamlets was expanded.

I can remember Turnpennys, think they was a removal company? If its where i think they were they was on same side as Sainsburys later to become the Charlton centre. The pub i,m thinking of was The friend in need which would have been down the side road of the High st surgery,i could be wrong.

Something for Paul Gee. Sometime ago John Turnpenny loaned me some old photographs of his shops. I enhanced them, framed them and handed them back. Here are a couple.
