I remember Paramours, the barbers was still there in the early 80s but when you went inside it was like stepping back to the 1930s,remember a sign in there saying "i smoke A1 tobacco"cricket or horse racing on the radio in the background, only good if you wanted short back n sides or a skinhead. He apparently used to cut hair for the borstal inmates in his spare time.Skinheads being in fashion then,we all went there because he was cheap.

Who can forget Thomas’s up the London Road. They always seemed to have what you needed.

Cobblers.
There was Mr Bryant, on the hill, near Mr Files' newsagent. But the one that impressed me as a youngster was the cave-like shop in Ethelbert Road. I forget the man's name, but the place was a little intimidating, with lasts and tools scattered about in the darkness, a pungent leather smell, and him on his high stool tapping away at a boot, like something out of Grimm.

That would have been Stewart the cobbler,Stew as he was known around the Hamlets.Worked from the front room of his tiny little house, was told he never had electric, just gas lighting,he was a nice old boy,we used to get blakey shoe studs from him when we were kids.Towards the end of his career he mainly just kept open for company, there was always someone popping in to see him.He was still there till about 40 years ago.

Also being in Tower Hamlets as a child there were a fair number of shops on the corners of South Road.
On the corner of Odo Road - Avery's?
On both corners of Tower Hamlets Street - one was a grocers - Sladdens?
Don't remember a shop in Ethelbert Road, but always found it a bit creepy along there.
There was also a shop at the corner of Devonshire and Goschen Roads.
I believe there was a chippy along Wyndham Road, but that must have shut before my time.

Humming Bird (Plantation before that) - up from the town hall.

Bakers (Revolver?) - further up on the corner opposite Victoria Hospital.
There was one upstairs in the Charlton Centre when it first opened.
Our Price, and for a while there was one opposite that did all sorts of unusual vinyl.
Even Boots used to do LP's.
Forum seems to be livelier since Vic left
Loving this thread. Pity we can't multi-quote.
I remember going into Boots intending to buy Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody single. Sold out everywhere. I ended up leaving with When by Showaddywaddy. Which is a really embarrassing answer to the, "What is the first single you ever bought?" question. I couldn't help that that particular piece of Queen plastic was sold out everywhere could I? My intentions were cool.
Plantation Records. Will never forget going in there looking for (I think) Adam & The Ants - The Kings Of The Wild Frontier LP with my Christmas and birthday record tokens all saved up. Again sold out everywhere. The owner asked me what I liked:
Me: (Something along the lines of), " Well, you know, fast lively stuff. Really not into slow songs".
Came out with the double live album that is Queen - Live Killers. Still one of my favourites.
Bakers Record shop. Was a genuine "chart return" shop I'm sure, (no wonder the owner drove a Porsche). With what was pretty much Dover's first video game arcade in the basement. Run by Harry "The Claw". Prior to that we used to have to sneak into the docks (both East and West) to play Space Invaders and the like.
I am still a massive music and video game nerd (possibly addict).
Formative years.

I expect Vic will return.
I remember this. It famously had a Piranha.

And yes to posts 6, 7 and 8. Pretty sure I'd tried there before ending up with the Showaddywaddy embarrassment.

Oh yes.
Need raffle tickets? Football scratchcards to cover the cost of the food for the pub darts/pool/quiz night?
Winmore.

I'm pretty sure South Road used to have one of the first Games Workshop shops in the country. Or at least a shop that stocked their stuff. They're a huge company now.
Edit: Not South Road. It was East Street. Where the unfortunate clingfilm incident later happened.
