Looked quite a big business in its day.I can only remember them doing removals and just before they shut i,m sure they was selling cycles and mopeds.Used to call in the shop with my mates,we was all around 16 at the time,we all liked to look but had little money to buy.

Bottom of Tower Hamlets rd onto the High st there was Deans shoe repairers,Corner house cafe which was very popular, now a micropub,on the other side of the road was the Grocers which is now a chemist and on the site of High st surgery was an indian restaurant and a type of second hand shop which i remember sold record players, guitars, radios etc.

So, with the WH Smith news, I remember it being Lavells before that.

And before all that it was George Hatton’s a quite large harbadashers shop. There was another one up London Road called Millin’s. I think both shops had a pulley system. When you paid it took your money to the cashier.

Who was the one part way up Castle Street, possibly past or near the coal merchant office, I only vaguely remember a bookshop being up there.
I used Dennis Weaver a lot when my children were little, it was a shame when they closed.
