The Town Lounge became a sex shop, part owned by a Councillor! I went in there once to deliver a London Road leaflet, I was quite amazed.

Such goings on in London road, who would ever expect it? I think before it became an establishment of adult interest it was Sals cafe.Central cafe changed hands a few times, and the Lobster pot at some point was taken over by that bloke on London rd who ran betting syndicates. He became a big name around town for a while and then suddenly dissapeared.

I can only remember his first name was Peter, this was probably 15-20years ago,had an office opposite the Methodist church in London rd,he flooded pubs n cafes with leaflets about his wonderful betting system,it looked to good to be true and it was. Many people got caught out by him and i,m sure i read that the law caught up with him in another town.I believe he was jailed.A very flamboyant character, used to like going in the Dover carnival with his big open topped american car, often seen wearing a cowboy hat, smoked big cigars,he was basically a con man.

Whites of Kent (Faversham) Ltd was incorporated in 1953 and also had shops in Faversham and Whitstable. Apparently they now do slippers, socks and professionally fitted lingerie too!

Probably going back in time before some of the youngsters on here can recall, I can remember the International tea company’s store in Cannon Street and also one in Biggin Street. The Cannon Street one was managed by a Mr Court.
These were stores where you could buy fresh bacon and other provisions in quantities by weight or number of rashers. The staff were skilled at carving the number of slices you wanted off of freshly cooked Gammons; none of the added water which is prevalent in today’s pre packed gas filled or vacuum packs.
They also sold pieces of fruit cake cut from a large slab and loose Mitre mixture sweets which were temptation for furtive fingers if no one was looking!
There were many soap powders sold with different names from those available today but one, OMO, was favoured by some for its additional properties. Left on certain window cills it messaged
OLD MAN OUT!
You were served by knowledgeable staff in a pleasant and efficient way which is different from the rush and tumble of some supermarkets that we have ‘progressed’ to today.
How times have changed!

Sweet shops. Bridge Street (now a house), Cherry Tree Avenue (same), and "Bent Ernie's" in London Road (which is now that Nepalese food place I think).

The sweet shop in Cherry Tree Avenue was run by Mr Allen. He used to sell loose peanuts that were warm.

The Market in Pencester I think was roughly where Poundland is now.I think it was called Shop around, had some good stalls in there. At one time I,m sure it was run by my mate,"Big Clive Carpenter",used to be a wrestler,a real nice bloke he was, very well known around town.

Martin Walter car showroom in Castle Street where the council office is now.
Lloyds bank where the Suite World shop is now, London Road
I don't think anyone has mentioned the sports shop that I think was Eddie Crush or the pub whose name I can not remember I only went in there once unlike some of the others.
