i don;t think i imagined this but coming past today, the building was being worked on in a big way.
i believe that it closed during the renaissance, suddenly a whole team of carpenters, glaziers etc are working like mad on it.
couple this with the new tea room opposite now opened, the subway will not look so uninviting.

That's correct , Howard. Part of the Empty Shop initiative, whereby Art works are being put in place to improve the visual appearance. This site is owned by DDC [funded by SEEDA] & it is hoped that by this example other landlords of empty properties will agree to let their premises be used until they can be let. Local artists are involved in this scheme under the guise of Dover Pride.

what a let down
i was expecting a new pub/restaurant.
never mind, i suppose it will brighten the place up.
Better than nothing, Howard - at least we will give the appearance of caring about our neighbourhood!!! It is the deriliction and shabbiness that have such a powerful impact when you enter the town or appraoch it from the sea.

Question - Why wasn't this done before? (the old indoor market has been in that state for years) It puts a new meaning to slowly, but surely, but at least Dover is moving forward, albeit at a snails pace.

Barry we did not own the property until recently. It was purchased as with the Britannia and the next door property along Townwall St as part of Port and Wellington Dock regeneration scheme. These are SEEDA funded acquisitions. To date not many landlords have responded to requests to allow art works to decorate their derelict shops. This has to be consensual. Many of the landlords are absentee London firms. We will persevere.

wetherspoons play a game with us.
every time we get up in arms over the state of it, they lodge a new planning application to give the impression that they are interested in the place.

I am not sure Howard - why build a pub with the main entrance out onto St James's before the multi-story goes ?
Been nice knowing you :)
Surely in this litigious age we can find a way to make Wetherspoons shape up?

Thanks for the update Paul I stand corrected, let us hope that other landlords including absentees take note of the postive moves that DDC have made to improve properties within the town centre
No reply from Wetherspoons yet - will post the response when and if it arrives.
