WGS, you old cynic!
'It’s welcome news that the Prime Minister has agreed a new deal for fast-tracking Albanian small boat returns. Albanians comprise about a third of all nationalities making the small boats crossings over the last few months.
But unless France steps up and stops the boats getting in the water and tackles the criminal gangs, my fear is that we will simply end up seeing one nationality replaced by another and the small boats continue to arrive - as we have seen happen year after year.
I met with the Prime Minister & the Home Secretary in Downing Street today. I emphasised the importance of an agreement with President Macron to stop the boats leaving France, agree a cross-channel security zone and returns to France to bring this to an end once and for all'.

I certainly hope Rishi Sunak is right but I am sorry, unless the illegals can be completely stopped from coming

Why theFrench would take them back to France is beyond me. They already have them causing issues Between. Calais & Dunkirk. The French locals are already up in arms with the French Government over the situation & it is a major political problem with the Mayor of Calais & her colleagues of all persuasions. They may take the money & stop some coming across but they then catch the next dinghy available. They occasionally have a clear out & place them somewhere else in France but they soon return.

Nice to read a post showing some understanding of the situation. I have spent many days working and staying in Calais and your assessment of the local situation is spot on.
What you won't hear Sunak et al say is that there is no legal way of forcing the French (or anyone else for that matter) to take back asylum seekers without our formally leaving the UNHCR. Prior to Brexit, we had the option of returning them to the country of departure but that, of course, no longer applies.
Despite the rhetoric, there is no such thing as an illegal asylum seeker. If no asylum is sought, then migrants can be repatriated a.s.a.p. If asylum is claimed, we are legally bound to afford due process all the while we remain signatory to UNHCR. How quick or exacting that process is, is for the UK government to decide. Equally, there are no legal constraints on where it takes place. Which is why accepting the French offer of processing them on French soil, never mentioned by this government, is so worthy of further exploration.

I think it's an issue that the UK won't solve
And French are having same issues and maybe if a few politicians in France lose seats they may do a little more?

Can all those various deserving nurses, paramedics and other workers now get £45 weekly pure spending money after all their bills are paid.
Seems the government can't afford it for those who actually work and deserve more.

I heard that the Boxing Day dip at Dover was a great success; 194 people went in and 763 came out.

Nice to see one of our local RNLI volunteers being awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Years Honours for saving the lives of over 2,000 people in the Channel.
He is quoted as saying the award came as a complete surprise as he'd only joined six weeks ago

Congratulations to Dennis
https://rnli.org/news-and-media/2022/december/30/rnli-volunteers-recognised-in-kings-new-year-honours
During 55 years of unbroken voluntary service, Denis Brophy has undertaken a wide range of roles at Walmer Lifeboat Station, including Crew, Coxswain, Deputy Launching Authority and Lifeboat Operations Manager, a position he has held since 2001.
In this time, Walmer Lifeboat Station has been involved in 1,257 launches, aided 1,429 people and saved 313 lives. Now, in recognition of his years of supportive and diplomatic leadership, he has been awarded an MBE.
Denis said: ‘The news was a great shock and very unexpected and I was moved, humbled and surprised that I was considered worthy of such an honour. I have only ever tried to do my best for Walmer lifeboat and the RNLI, and to see the station thrive and everyone there develop in their roles has been a reward in itself.
‘It’s a true honour to accept the award on behalf of everyone at Walmer Lifeboat Station both past and present.’
I copied the above to correct #495 MBE (not BEM).

I object to awards dished out to the many who get one for simply doing the job they are well paid to do, like MPs or company directors or civil servants.
Surely most celebrities get their awards for the charity work they do quite often by using their high profile to raise awareness. At the moment
my hero celebrity is Kevin Sinfield who has raised several £millions and raised public awareness of the devastating illness Motor Neurone Disease.

126 unaccompanied asylum-seeking children went missing from Kent County Council's care last year, according to figures released to the BBC under a freedom-of-information request. 14 of those children remain unaccounted for.
