Captain Haddock wrote:LONDON (Reuters) - Britain is anticipating that 56,000 migrants will cross the Channel in small boats to its shores this year, court documents show, meaning it would be need to house as many as 140,000 asylum seekers.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has made stopping boat arrivals one of his five priorities after the number of migrants arriving on the south coast of England soared to a record level in 2022 of more than 45,000, up 500% in the last two years.
Already this year, more than 5,000 more people have arrived in Britain across the Channel.
In court documents submitted as part of a case being brought against it at London's High Court on Wednesday, the government said as of March it was estimated to be accommodating more than 109,000 asylum seekers, with 48,000 in hotels at a cost of 6.2 million pounds ($7.7 million) per day.
"Significantly, the number needing support is predicted to grow still further: Home Office operational plans are based on scenarios of up to 56,000 small boat arrivals in 2023," the document said. "That would take the supported population to between 120,000 and 140,000."
Best to start processing them then. Plain stupid adding to the backlog. Even sending a few hundred out to Rwanda (and accepting a few hundred back) will do nothing to ease the problem. The idea of rejoining the Dublin agreement or establishing processing centres in France might help...oh no - that will never suit the rhetoric.
But, hey, the local elections are just round the corner and Natalie needs all the help she can get.

So Ray
Still no solutions
As you say making it a priority could badly backfire for him and his party

The Home Office reveals a Channel migrant with a thick beard and receding hairline claimed he was 17 but turned out to be 42 and a former ISIS fighter. He is fighting deportation on legal aid saying he has depression and can only bet treated by the NHS.

Depression? He needs to get over it; male-pattern baldness is not exactly uncommon!

Isn't it part of Sunak's five point election plan?
He must realise the present proposals are going to make little or no difference .

Of course they aren't. Any way you analyse the problem, that is the inevitable conclusion. BTW 'Stop the Boats' was originally used in Australia. Lynton Crosby anyone? Even the slogan is just a poor piece of plagiarism.

Isn't nice when a political commentator displays a grip on reality.

The son of an investment trust manager opines from a rather nice town house in Primrose Hill.

Ah yes. I always appreciate well thought out, analytical criticism.

I don't pretend to understand this but, according to Mrs Elphicke in her Commons speech "In my constituency we see Labour’s true colours: it is an open-borders, pro-immigration party. It does not want to stop the boats. Just like Brexit, so on small boats: Labour cannot be trusted and does not listen."

Labour's position, of course, being that it wants to stop the boats, but doesn't believe that the Government's plan will work.

Well I daresay, but mainly I couldn't understand her references to her constituency or to Brexit. In fact so far as Brexit goes, one could argue that Mrs E herself is not to be trusted and doesn't listen. As for Labour, there may be such a party here but, if there is, I haven't seen or heard from it.

Seriously no idea what 'our' Natalie is on about.
Used to be quite amusing when local failed journalists wrote 'our' Charlie's stuff but apparently she's gone for ChatGDP
E.g.:-
Write 1000 words to explain how immigration control must be firm but fair whilst providing safe routes for whichever poor foreign kiddies with lovely doe like eyes have appeared on last night's TV news and are flavour of the month for faux compassion (NB helpful if they look a bit like you or me or their parent allegedly works for NHS)

'Good afternoon, thank you for contacting the SSCL Resourcing Hub. There is no qualification requirements for the position of Small Boats Operational Command'.
Smart lad wanted! Our local butcher used to have these same exacting standards for his delivery boys.

So it's come to digging up dead dogs so as not to offend asylum seekers?
