Why in both papers this week is there an article questioning the whys and wherefores of the non vocal stance of our Town Clerk. What prompted this?

it was in a speech to the dover society.
the question was on the grounds of the most vocal man in town suddenly going silent once in the job of town clerk.
apparently, mike said that there was no embargo on him saying anything in public.
so, in effect, the question was not answered.

Mike is in a difficult position,he was not afraid to have a go in the old days of the Town Centre Management, and we had a few barnies in the past, but now he has to be an advisor to all the Councillors on the Town Council,he will give advice as well as implement the decisions of the Council,it is not his job to lead the Council that is the Mayor's job.
In the days of Robert Bailey who rarely would be seen in front of the camera yet his advice was more of a legal man,Mike of course was well known as Man about Town and is still expected to have a knowledge of what goes on but can not be as outspoken as he was,he is after all a Public Servant.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

Simple fact is, the Town Clerk must remain unbiased and and can't be seen to have a political viewpoint.
End of story.

i wonder what is considered a political viewpoint.
according to the reports mike said that ddc is responsible for compulsory purchase orders.

My personal view is that Mike has every right to a viewpoint, but if you speak on behalf of as it was then TCM or now the Town council then its that bodies viewpoint you should be putting forward and not your owen personakl viewpoint.
At the end of the day thats what mikes paid and expected to do.
If you want to have strong political views on whgatever don't be a town clerk/TCM manager
Its not an attack just my view

As Town Centre Manager Mike needed to be vocal and shout from the rooftops so to speak which we all know he done very well and indeed with great success. As town clerk now, the criteria is very different, so why the need to lead with a headline ' I'm not being gagged says town clerk' or questions as to why he is not so outspoken now, surely both papers know why! After all, we all do judging from the comments above. I rest my case.
